Reconsideration question

bp777bp777 Posts: 408 ✭✭✭✭✭

This was graded a 65. I sent it in for a reconsideration. Its now in quality check. Does this mean that the reconsideration was successful?

that happens when they start the grading process for all reconsiderations

a very nice looking dollar, I hope you at least get a +

Hopefully they give you a "+" as stated by @davewesen . Nice coin. To answer your question, you cannot rely on the "quality check" status from my experience.

Did you ask them to display the coin with the reverse side facing?

That would indicate it is now in a new holder and therefore upgraded ... even if only a + added

Nope, Everytime I've done a Reconsideration the Cert # becomes inactive at some point. If it gets a + it keeps the same Cert #.

Interesting ... I had one last month ... PR65 TO PR65+ and a new number . Old number is now inactive

Either they changed a procedure or just not consistent?

This was a recent successful regrade (63 to 63+) and it was issued a new cert number.

It was already holdered w the reverse facing the front, so im assuming if it gets cracked out it will get placed in the same way

    Interesting.

I am not, repeat NOT, doubting your account.

That said, according to the current PCGS Reconsideration webpage, the cert number is supposed to stay the same if it upgrades.

Just sharing how PCGS says a reconsideration is supposed to work with respect to the cert number.
Apparently, it does not always work as advertised.

That's a really nice Morgan, I think it deserves an upgrade.

I could see it in a 66 holder. Good luck!

.Regrades ALWAYS get new cert numbers. Reconsideration is supposed to keep the same cert number, and as noted above, does become inactive for a short period. It’s been suggested on this forum to write on the submission form of Reconsideration to “Please keep the same cert number”.

Regrades get new cert#'s. Reconsiderations keep the same.

Don't read too much into what happens during the final minutes. You'll know soon enough.

No upgrade. Stays a 65. But that’s ok. It was worthy of the attempt. Off to CAC.

Steve would it be fair to say that reconsideration is best if you are looking for at least a plus upgrade and regrade is best if you are looking for a full point upgrade but are not concerned if you don’t get a plus grade.

On the submission form, when you check “Reconsideration”, you then have to also check one of the following: Full Grade, Plus Grade, Suffix, or Any. As such, with Reconsideration, one who is looking for a full point upgrade but is not concerned if they don’t get a plus upgrade just indicates as such by checking the Full Grade box.

As noted above, with Regrade, your coin is removed from the holder before grading, so in theory it is graded blind when raw, and then must get a new cert number for the new holder, but someone at PCGS makes sure it doesn’t get downgraded. With Reconsideration, it gets graded while in the original holder, and is only removed if upgraded, but if upgraded, that new holder should then have the same cert number.

Either they changed a procedure or just not consistent? From my experience, the # was no longer valid

The number becomes invalid when the coin goes to grading. I to had a recent coin in for reconsideration. # invalid wait, and wait, and wait.......came back the same, no upgrade.

Steve would it be fair to say that reconsideration is best if you are looking for at least a plus upgrade and regrade is best if you are looking for a full point upgrade but are not concerned if you don’t get a plus grade.

The original intent behind the reconsideration service was to allow a new assessment without risking losing the holder if no upgrade is merited. Think OGH, rattlers, stickered coins, etc. If reconsideration fails, the coin is returned in the same holder submitted.

Regrades are always cracked. New judgments are made without concern over issues that might go undetected due to the plastic holders in the way. Coins are judged raw.

Soon after the reconsideration service was introduced it was modified to allow for limited upgrades. Plus-only (for an AU58 that might be part of an everyman set, e.g.). Or other options, as @winesteven mentioned.

It is probably true that most reconsideration submissions are about not losing the holder with failures. If the holder is unimportant and you are just hoping for an upgrade (with a guarantee not to downgrade) then always choose regrade.
