Blue Holders - Anything now comparable to OGH & Rattlers?

CatbertCatbert Posts: 7,360 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was looking once again at the PCGS Museum of Holders:

https://pcgs.com/holdermuseum

and reflecting on the often stated perception that there has been loosening and tightening of grading at the TPGs. I know PCGS would dispute that this perception is valid, but I'm curious if board members place any additional value on slabs 4.0 or later now that 24 years have passed since the blue insert came into being? Which holder adds (tightening) or detracts (loosening) value since then?

And what about old copper? Many members value the old holders due to feeling the metal is stable. Do any of the blue holders provide this same reassurance now that time has passed?

so 4.0 is difficult to find for moderns. Other than rare plastic, is there any other aspect of this generation that adds value to you?

No, not really. It's just fun to look for something that is somewhat scarce as the feeling acquired when I stumble upon one is enjoyable.
Plus, I like how the insert isn't so "busy" as the newer blue labels are.

I do not see the solid blue label holder as undergraded, however as you mentioned I am a copper collector so any of the older holders with a nice coin garner a bit more interest from me over a brand new holder. And I too much prefer the solid gasket over the prong style that both services use now. I have noticed that I'm seeing a few sellers now including the solid blue holder when using the "old holder" tag or hype, seems lame to me but I guess it may work.

I like the 4.0 holder, but its value to me is in the proof of stability of the appearance of the coin over a substantial number of years.

OBH for "Old Blue Holder" like OGH can be seen used at times.

Here is a busy cert for you, I like the new 2.0 I can use my phone and scan it. Pick’s up the chip that is in the holder and give me all the info right now.

I collect coins, marbles, old decks of cards and firearms.... I do not collect holders. Might have some old ones, but do not really know or care. Cheers, RickO

I sold a coin simply BECAUSE it was in one of the dinky "get lost in the box" rattlers.

I think I can say that I am NOT a holder collector. :s

That is vital information to learn, entirely relevant to the thread's intent, and sharing this profound revelation about yourself was important to be revealed.

For smaller coins, like gold dollars and cents, I prefer the solid gasket, so I like the older holders for that reason, it just looks better I think...

I have one rattler and one Old Blue Holder-ed coin. As far as the narrow rattler design is concerned, I very recently picked up a "Rattler Holder adapter" on eBay that allows me to store my rattler in my 'Box of Twenty'. I love the design of the old holders and will pay more if all else works for me, especially if the holder is mostly free of scratches. I found this 1795 Half Dollar O.115 at US Coins, in Houston, TX in 2015, when I lived in the area. It was my first nice purchase after re-kindling my love of numismatics. Obviously, I didn't pay a premium for the holder seven years ago. I love the solid gasket.
