Value of 1865 $5 gold piece low grade

KISHU1KISHU1 Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭

I’m looking at a raw 1865 $5 gold piece that’s probably a Po-Ag grade
PCGS site says there’s between 30-40 known in all grades
Most of the ones graded are XF to AU
How do you value such a coin in a low grade
Sorry I don’t have a picture
Thanks

Are you sure that it's not a contemporary counterfeit?

Also, it may be an ex-jewelry coin which would affect its value.

If it is genuine, just buy it.
I'd pay $5000 sight unseen if genuine, regardless of grade.

Still worth significant monies, even mount removed. If its moderately eye appealing and of course genuine, I would say 5-10K.

Can someone find this auction listing on the internet? I can't imagine there are more than one for sale. I don't want to bid on it but I'm sure curious what it looks like and how it's described.

Does it look good or a contemporary counterfeit?

    Thanks

Looks real but I see the top of an S below the eagle.

Looks like an S mint... appears authentic... but judging a coin in that condition from pictures is dicey at best. Cheers, RickO

Numismedia shows a value of $1110 for this coin in G4 so this one is probably worth around $600 to $700.

it looks good - could grade as high as AG-03

a similar one sold at David Lawrence a few years ago for $1000 - your auction could go for more since goldis up

Agree. It would probably get a details grade from NGC or PCGS in any event.

When I saw this post last night, before the photo's, I was thinking it was probably most liekly an S worn to a point that is hard to see the s mintmark.

Even 1865-S is still scarce if not outright rare. I like it.
