Contrary to popular belief, as Paul Revere was tearing through Middlesex County on that April night in 1775, he never said, “The British are coming!”

Rather, he and William Dawes shout, "The Regulars are out! The Regulars are out!"

“Everybody was British back then," said Andrew Tobin, of Franklin — who ought to know.

Tobin is reenacting Paul Revere’s historic ride today, Patriot’s Day, as a member of The National Lancers — a volunteer cavalry militia troop and the Official Mounted Ceremonial Troop of Massachusetts.

Due to limited time to complete the ride and to ease the strain on the horses, two riders will complete Revere’s journey. This year, Richard Reale will start in Boston’s North End and Tobin will take over in Medford and finish in Lexington.

Paul Revere and William Dawes were captured by the British and never warned the colonist the British were coming. It was actually Samuel Prescott that warned the colonist of the British actions. Somehow Paul got the credit for a feat he never accomplished.

When History and Hearsay blend and twist facts....it reminds me of learning that Columbus discovered America then to only find out it was really Leif Eriksson, some Viking. Rewriting history for our best interest.

Only when Columbus discovered America it stayed discovered. Churchill joked to FDR at Yalta that Columbus was the first Communist. When he left he had no idea where he was going, when he arrived he had no idea where he was and he did it all with other peoples money.

It seems that much of history becomes romanticized... the facts become a tad blurred and bits are added to make the story better. Cheers, RickO
