newer PCI slabs with obverse toning

davewesendavewesen Posts: 6,390 ✭✭✭✭✭

I got some newer PCI slabs with obverse toning. I am trying to decide if they blue/purple on the obverse is slab induced or AT when put in the slab. The reverse looks white, except for the nickel clad. Have you seen anything like this before?

By slab induced, do you mean the toning was caused over time by the holder (like the ASEs with 100% white labels where the label was known to cause the toning)? Or do you mean someone gassed a white coin in that slab?

I would lean to either the slab being gassed or the coins already looked like this when slabbed. This is one of the more recent PCI generations and their grading seemed "optimistic" so I wouldn't be surprised if AT coins "slipped" by.

I have also noticed quite a few of these pop up recently on eBay. All look questionable. The last time I recall seeing coins in this generation, they were mostly blast white. So maybe that implies the gassed theory is more plausible.

Yeah I saw some peace dollars on ebay recently in these slabs with asking price around $100 I think. They look AT and most definitely overgraded. You're better off buying raw examples of the look you would like.

If caused by the slab shouldn't both sides of the coin be affected like these.

that would depend if it was caused by the rubber insert or the label.

@davewesen well supposedly its the label that causes the PCI toners

Most likely the ink on the labels.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Those "bullet train" labels are the last generation of PCI (AFAIK they've shut down again - domain resolves to a marginally scummy domain parking site) and date from 2011...2012... and newer. I've seen cert#s up to 30k.

Point is that's not enough time for subtle slab-based toning.

Looks to me like they were AT prior to slab....JMO... Cheers, RickO
