Tom Bender Collection to be auctioned

According to Legend's weekly report ... "We know Bender knew the market was strong and it was time for him to sell for personal reasons."
Combined with the Bass announcement, if you ever wanted to build a set $3 gold -- especially proofs -- there's a lot coming to market.

Who is Tom Bender ?
He has the top Registry Sets of Seated Half Dimes and Seated Dimes.
And the only complete set of Seated Half Dimes, as he has the unique 1870-s.
(He bought the Law / Simpson seated half dime set).

Next owner of the Unique Half Dime will be the 4th owner in 14 years? It wasn’t that long ago where 4 owners of a unique or near unique classic coin might require 100 or more years of ownership. No real conclusion, just an observation.
Wondercoin
Here is the provenance up until when Simpson sold it to Tom Bender -
it looks like Simpson held it for the longest period.
Seems as if the hot market continues - and those holding high end coins are taking advantage - makes sense. Cheers, RickO

He exhibited portions of his collection a few years ago at the March 2019 Baltimore show. Coverage here -- https://archive.org/details/EGobrechtApril2019vol15no4whole171/mode/2up.
He has other #1 Registry Sets in Indian Head Cents, $1 gold, and Carson City.

His Indian Head cents sets are retired ... looks like they may have been sold a few years ago.
What firm is auctioning these coins?
Tom has a great eye and only bought coins with high eye appeal. A true coin connoisseur!
I don't know yet.
It will be interesting to see if the long and short pedigrees hold up the same over time.
Interesting fact that people spend a million on a half dime. Just think tiny coins don’t show anything to the eye. Just a personal opinion. I guess I would rather spend big money on a bigger coin
Wouldn’t Legend be the expected venue? Isn’t he Laura’s client?
You can always spend bigger money on a bigger coin, like 10 to 20 million
I think they will be auctioned through Heritage.
Tom has the single finest Carson City gold coin, the 1876 cc $5 in MS66. I bet that this one comes close to $1M at auction.
Hmmm, So was Simpson!
I can confirm that Tom Bender’s magnificent collection will be coming to market in a series of sales conducted by Heritage – likely starting this August. We are honored to have been selected by Mr. Bender to auction his coins and look forward to these events. Please stand by for more specific information soon.

Got to know Tom a little bit 15-20 years ago while competing for IHC's. Never foresaw that he would be involved in so many series - nice accomplishments!
