Question About 2021-D Morgans

santinidollarsantinidollar Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭✭✭

Concerning the 2021 Morgans, I noticed this first on eBay (never a great gauge of much of anything) but I’ve seen the highest prices for MS70s minted in Denver on other sites.

I saw a lot of complaints about the quality of many of the coins last year. Did Denver have the rockiest time getting out unmarred coins you suppose? Or something else?

@santinidollar... I have read, here and other sites, about the D 2021 Morgan issues. I only purchased the CC issue, so cannot speak of actually seeing them. It has been a fairly consistent message though. Cheers, RickO

My experience is the Denver generally mint has the worse quality of the 4 in proof/special-issues and Philadelphia is worse than Denver in circulating strikes.

I think all the 2021 Morgan’s were produced at the Philadelphia mint.

Living in Denver all my life, I decided to purchase a handful of the 2021 D Morgans, every single one had flaws and I ended up selling them off.

Oddly enough, I also got 3 - 2021 S Morgans and each is fantastic.

I understand that the no-mintmark (Philadelphia) and Both privy marked Morgans were struck at the Philadelphia branch of the United States Mint. And the 2021 Peace dollars were also struck at Philadelphia.

Denver problems I noticed - Scratches across the surfaces, or what looked like stress marks in the cheek area.

Philly- the peace dollar, the P morgan, the CC and O privy Morgans

    SF- the S morgan

    Denver- the D morgan.

    The D Morgan’s we’re a mess. Look back at the threads. 😉🙀🦫

In one of my submission I sent in 13 in one order and received 3 that graded 70 they where the worst graded coin In that submission for 70’s that I received from the mint. I just sent in 40+ More let’s see how good they graded out. But it was one of the toughest coins to grade 70. I sent in some small submission and received zero 70’s so that is why they are so much higher in price.

    Hoard the keys.

The irony was when I made my 2021 Morgan/Peace submission at Baltimore, I was surprised to see an MS70 Denver (all were 70s except for CC)

Seems the D were made in Denver. The S made in San Francisco
Here’s 3 clips implying as much. The others made at Philadelphia 😉🙀🦫

A member on another site posted the latest population report that bears out Denver problems. Wonder if the MS62 got run over by Amtrak…..

A quick check of the pops will show why Denver 70s are more expensive than the others.

The 2021-D Morgans had more quality issues than the other 2021 Morgans and Peace. Consequently, the percentage grading 70 is lowest, which in turn, increases price for a 70 relative to the others. Here is an analysis that I did about 3 weeks ago:

Quite a price difference, for sure . A very well known dealer has the 69s for $150. It’s $850 for the 70s. Too bad that Denver couldn’t keep up with the other Mints. MS62? That coin should have seen the melting pot.

I was hoping the coinfacts images might show the 62. Lowest was this 66.

There are definitely PL D mints out there. The grading services have failed to denote them on the labels. I personally have 2-70s that are PL; even when submitted and noted “assess for PL” it was ignored. Well—those are not going anywhere because I suspect shortly we will see some MS70PL D Morgan’s show up and mine will be resubmitted

In my opinion the “O” privy was the toughest in 70. The number might show otherwise but that’s my experience

My one Denver Morgan I bought graded at MS69. But I will say the finish is much more proof-like than any of the other coins I received.

I had three D Morgans I sent in that looked great by eye and under the loop (to me when shipped out). Received MS70, MS69, and MS68. I very was disappointed with the 68 and didn't agree but should feel fortunate. I'd have been really sick to my stomach if I got that MS62. Ouch! However, I cannot see how that was sent in at all unless somebody was completely new to submitting. I think anybody with a general understanding would have realized it wouldn't be worth it. Maybe it was poorly packaged when sent off for grading or maybe they thought with all the hype last year and pre-possession prices on Ebay it would still be worth a bit more than they had invested in it. We all have our own reasons.

I got the legal limit of all of the 2021 dollars and they are still sealed in the original Mint shipping boxes. Is there any reason at all to keep them in the mint-sealed boxes? Do you get anything different on the labels if you send them in that way?

If you want ER label they want it sealed in the mint shipping box. Available after 30-day limit as long as you send in the package as received from the mint. Un-opened
Otherwise I see no reason not to open it up and check out the coins. 😉🙀🦫

This is just silly. There is plenty that eBay doesn't measure well but they are a better gauge of more things than most anyplace else out there could ever hope to be.

    OK thanks.
Second question: Does an ER label bring more, since they were all sold in roughly 20 minutes?
