I got my first waffle and I really like it. It was really affordable and surprisingly detailed. When I decided to go for one I wanted an example that was not a blank. Since no slabbed nickels were available I chose a dime and am very pleased with it. The seller from eBay also included a disc and wallet for the slab, which was a pretty impressive bonus gift set.
From what I can see the reverse looks to have been off center or improperly aligned. I wonder what service type must be selected to get these types of coins in pcgs holders... I want a nickel next.

    can you see any reason they deemed it unfit for circulation?

    Interesting... How these escape the mint always intrigues me.... Nice acquisition. Cheers, RickO

    Does anyone know why they didn't put the date on the slab?

    My understanding is that these “escaped” through the trash but were diverted to dealers on the way to be scrapped. I wonder if it’s still easy to get waffled coins for recent years.

    The really interesting ones are the Martha Washington patterns.

    I was thinking the same thing! Time to send it back for a reholder?

    It looks like the reverse die was misaligned or off center. The Secret Service released a large group of these to a dealer or dealers, for sale in 2003. I copied this from the listing;
    “ Here's an exciting 2003P Roosevelt Dime that was Mint Cancelled at the US mint. This is the first time in US mint history that the mint ever cancelled coins. Mint Canceling is a new process the mint is now using to keep error coins from getting out into circulation. There was only one release of Mint Cancelled coins from the mint made available for the public...”

    I heard or read somewhere that the mint had 55 gal. drums full of these things. A gov't contractor was hired to take them away and recycle the metal. But the contractor quickly found out they could make more money by selling them individually.

    I think that was the story, but don't quote me.
