You've probably noticed I haven't been around much the last couple of years. Three daughters at three different universities, in three different time zones, and one getting married. Combined with a death in the family, has kept me pretty busy.
Several years ago I nearly completed a Capped Bust Half Dime collection, lacking the super rare 1835 LM-12.
As luck would have it, I found a raw, low-grade, unattributed one on eBay with an opening bid of $25. As bad luck would have it, two other bidders had also found it. In the last 10 seconds of the auction, the bidding went from around $40 to over $2200. Fortunately, it ended there as one more bid and I would have lost it. Anyway, just wanted show it.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

@UtahCoin ... Congratulations on your acquisition and Congratulations on your three daughters in college. Condolences on your loss. Cheers, RickO
so what you are saying, is that you have completed the entire LM run of half dimes?!?!?
either way, gratz on a monster newp. when a coin in that condition goes for that much (probably worth more) one knows they have a serious coin!
i'm elated for you that it looks like a gradable example too. not often the case when ultra rare and low grade examples show up.
perhaps one day if/when sent off for at the very least, the protection of a slab details or straight-graded, you'll remember us and share that as well.

They were stunned. They were hoping to get $40. I asked them to ship it Certified and they asked me for another $22 to cover shipping. I said no.

Still a great buy at the $2200 price for this very rare variety.
Congrats on the purchase, your daughters in college, and condolences for your loss.

I was the one who bid 2207, what was your last bid? I just kick myself for not going higher, Congrats anyway, I sure I will never get another chance on the lm 12..I have 116/123 of the set.....still missing the 1829 LM 11, 1830 LM 5, 1833 LM 3.5, 1833 LM 5, 1835 LM 12, and the 1836 LM 1.1. It's just a fascinating little coin!
Anyway, congratulations!...Jon
Great to see you posting again, and congratulations on the score!
.
I'm not sure, but I think my max bid was 2300. (the older I get, the less I remember).
A number of years ago I cherrypicked a raw XF 1833 LM-5 for 260.
Until I sold my set, I had 200 CBHD's. My wife kind enough to point out that if things got tough, we had 10 bucks in half dimes....

Utah,
You're a rich man in more ways than ten bucks in CBHD.
Congratulations, that's awesome!
Good eye!
