unless it is something obvious, newcombs are virtually impossible to attribute from anything less than stellar images. i bet people have almost gone mad doing these at the tpgs. i mean, seriously, THEY ARE TUFF! and that is even with the books.
for sure, there are plenty of members on this board that can just dust me attributing these and while i consider myself fairly proficient, it would be pretty difficult to attempt attributing this w/o larger and sharper images.
that being said, here is a little bit bigger set of image(s) to work with. i look forward to seeing the attribution!
edited to add: open in new tab and/or download. they are MUCH bigger than in this post.
Check out N-41. Seems to be the only variety that really matches with the goofy date/digit placement. Apparently an R-1 so that increases the likelihood.
If you're not already using them, the Newman Numismatic Portal has the Grellman book and the Goldberg Auctions archives have the Holmes sales with quality images.

For a novice it is very tough!!!! I am learning, but its a huge new world of varieties!!
.
a good place to start is vams (6000+) or colonials (idk, not just a lot but VERY difficult, especially in lower grades) and if you become even partially proficient, it is all downhill from there!
i bet scd, tokens, cwt etc can keep one on their toes. (personally, i'd love to know all of the mentioned but i've only so much energy, time and recall to go around)
if i can turn up that grellman book on nnp, i'll give the op coin a stab but regulator probably nailed it. (i need the practice)
edited to add: can you designate ancients? that is an area that makes my knees knock together. H A R D - i can barely fathom authentication of ancients and/or altered. i guess technically, i'm not sure where ancients start but doing just foreign coins from current back a couple/few thousand years is a rough sport to play.
