Did I just avoid a scam?

I sold a 1 ounce gold eagle to someone with no feedback. The buyer paid right away and the buyer sent me a message saying that the address on their profile is wrong. The buyer sent me a photograph of a different address and told me to ship the coin there to his sisters house. I cancelled the order since it seemed very strange.

What do you guys think? Was this person trying to scam me and say they never got the coin? (So they can keep the coin and get my money).

Edit: Hey I just realized that the person who bought the coin is different than the person who messaged me. I think the person who messaged me was the scammer trying to “intercept” the package. The actual buyer may have been legitimate. Oh well I already cancelled…

You definitely did the right thing. Only ship to verified addresses. I just wonder how many people would fall for this, ship the coin, and then get screwed on a refund since you shipped to an unverified address (a picture?!! Please!!) Now, you're out the coin and the money...

I may have emailed the "new" (no feedback) buyer, explaining eBay policy. Would not ship to other address,no matter what. Should this buyer give you negative feedback, just show ebay the buyers message to you,to get it removed.

I feel you to be a very lucky man. You lost nothing as you still have the coin and could have lost quite more.

Definitely sounds like a scam. Ship to an unverified address and no one would protect you.

Did the request come from the same person who purchased? That's a different scam that does not involve the buyer at all. always check this before cancelling on an otherwise honest buyer.

Is the buyer outside of the US? if so that's rule number two - don't sell high value items outside of the US.

You one smart and lucky guy. You send to new address , then buyer claims they did not receive the item. Nonverified address. Ebay sides with buyer and you lose it all. Nice job on recognizing this.

Great that u did not fall for that scammer.
2 years ago I fell for a similar scam... I lost it because I was / am a nice guy and trusted the buyer. it was only $75.

am curious: how did the buyer pay you?
or is this now a secret with the new and greedy "Fee-bay" bank?

Today is the first day of the rest of my life

Hey I just realized that the person who bought the coin is different than the person who messaged me. I think the person who messaged me was the scammer trying to “intercept” the package. The actual buyer may have been legitimate. Oh well I already cancelled…

I think now you should probably inform ebay of this whole transaction to potentially save somebody else some grief.

Ah I got bitten by missing that possibility

Forward said scam message to the real buyer and apologize profusely.

If by any chance this happens and you think it might be legit, please explain to the "buyer" how he can add an address to his eBay account so that everyone is covered. A couple of years ago I ordered a very small gift for a friend and was able to change the address, so I don't see why any legit person can't.

Maybe they are working together. Best not to ship to any other address then the one on there PayPal or Ebay. :#

I've had quite a few requests to ship to a different address. I've never lost a sale because of it. The key is communication. The last time it happened I ended up canceling and relisting for the buyer so he could change his address with ebay.

Had this happen to me as well. However, real eBay buyer was legit and I shipped to eBay confirmed address—no problems.
My feeling is these scammers look for recently closed auctions for high value items and ask in a separate eBay internal mail to send somewhere else. It always is a pasted address (photo) in the mail. I don’t think these scammers are associated with the original buyer. I can be wrong but my experience is it wasn’t.

I’ve had one request to change address this year on the Bay for a street address to a PO Box. He said he was concerned about porch pirates. I think it was a legit request for a new-ish buyer and I let him know that he needs to change it on his end and I explained how to do it. He decided to stick to the original address and I shipped to the original address with no issues.

@Panda4456 - I think the request you received is definitely a scam attempt - so glad you caught it!

Yes this person has gotten a few sellers I've worked with recently. What City/State was given to you by the fake account?

The reason it's a zero feedback account is because eBay picks up on the accounts once this happens and somebody reports it, and NARU's the account.

The most recent item I purchased and lost to this scam went to Lodi, CA.
