What happened to the obverse of this Kennedy Half?

I recently picked up this Kennedy proof at an antique store. I paid $12 for it. I tried to take different angles on the obverse, to show the dull, flat look. There doesn't appear to be any hair lines. The reverse is a normal looking. Any idea what could have caused this? Thanks,
Jim!

Thanks Mr_Spud. I'm curious as to why someone would only do that to the obverse.

Maybe they stopped when they saw how bad the obverse came out?🤔

That would make sense, but why buff a proof in the first place? Thanks for the responses. Greatly appreciated :)

It looks like it was pretty heavily tarnished. Someone thought they'd clean it up. :/

Buffed and/or polished with paste. I had done similar things to 1964 JFK half dollars when I was experimenting with coins in grade school back in the 1970s.

How cool would it be, Tom, if you recognized this Kennedy has the coin you buffed!

It may have been used in jewelry such as a belt buckle, necklace, or a bolo tie where only the obverse was exposed to view.

I was looking through Kennedy halves the other day, and wondered the same thing ; only a different coin

It was @Ricko in the parlor room with the buffing wheel!

Folks, I do apologize for not responding earlier, but I was just released from state prison lol :)
Thanks to all the responses, however, it seems the evidence points to Ricko and his buffing wheel.
Having said that, can we start the bidding on this unusual, one of kind, proof Kennedy @ $14? lol :)

It could have been mounted in something ornamental with the obverse exposed, over time it was polished, probably several times.
