The original and only gold Daniel Morgan at Cowpens Medal struck by the Philadelphia Mint in 1839, untraced since 1885, an anonymous owner consigned the medal to be auctioned off at Stack's Bowers Galleries April 4-8 in Costa Mesa, California.
The pre-auction sales estimate is $250,000 to $500,000.

Amazing.

News had broken out on coinworld earlier this month. Don't know how the article was missed.

I had a good friend in middle and high school who was named Daniel Morgan by his father, who is a military historian.
He has a younger brother named Nathanael Greene.

I missed that one too then because of being tad busy and being not so regular for past few days. Hopefully some mod can merge this thread into that.

It looks like it is in near pristine condition. It probably went untouched for many, many decades to have survived in that condition.
What a beautiful medal... and I would like to know 'the rest of the story'- like where has it been all these years. I also wonder what happened to the original that was stolen..... Melted? Buried? Hidden in some wall somewhere?? Wouldn't that be amazing if it surfaced now? Cheers, RickO
That might be watching on that nice piece
