What's the cause?
Bored and had a roll of Jeffs sitting on my desk, 2006P. 33 out of the 40 have some sort of luster break on them. Some obverse and some reverse. I have 9 out of that roll that have the same break from the CE in Montecello SW down. As shown. What is the proper name of this issue? Can't believe they are all struck through so must be something else happening.
Thanks,
bob

a close up would be a little better just in case but i'll go with struck-through grease.
almost thought die damage.
Agree it looks like struck thru grease.
I thought about that as well and dismissed as I have 9 of them. Would grease on a die stay for more than a strike or two? It's on the field and that confuses me.
My camera skills are not good enough to get closer but I'll try.........don't hold your breath.

Looks like grease to me. I've run into similar anomolies on a run of new nickels.
Greasy die strikes can be progressive, such as a cud getting larger or a die crack getting longer. (does that make sense?)
Difficult to assess from those pictures... However, it seems to vary slightly from coin to coin. Likely struck through grease - grease can pick up debris and 'harden' a tad, adhering to the die. Cheers, RickO
no probs. i wasn't complaining.
for sure grease (or other stuff) stays on that long. that crap gets SUPER compressed.
Grease it is................thanks guys!
