Environmental damage. Occurred after it left the mint

Any idea how? I’ve seen stuff on toning etc.. but haven’t seen anything that looks like that?
There's no telling. But be assured, it's nothing but a stained nickle.

Nickels are made from an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel. Copper is a reactive metal and will easily discolored when exposed to certain environmental conditions.
Could have been found buried in the ground while metal detecting or even was in the bottom of a cars cup holder and had pop or coffee spilled on it. Environmental toning/damage happens in a variety of ways.

That is environmental damage... stained due to contact with an unknown, but 'unfriendly' substance. Could be a coin dug from the dirt. Cheers, RickO
