Have you ever seen someone do this before?

Why would someone do this to a once amazing piece? https://share.icloud.com/photos/01duyMyXHZ7_3U-L4z5n-N5kg

That's a counterstamp. There are books on the subject and people (like me) collect these. The one in your link is a maverick, meaning that it cannot be positively identified as to the person, place or meaning. Keep in mind that you can buy a Gem BU Peace dollar for $50, so that circulated coin is not that amazing.

That 1923 Peace dollar is worth more with the "L.M." counterstamp than without, imho.

As a matter of fact, I am going to buy that coin for $25 and then offer it to Legend-Morphy Auctions for a cool $1,000,000.

    Me, too.

And I even know someone who counterstamps quite a few coins (although not vintage silver dollars).

Hey, maybe you could shop this one around for me while your at it?
I think it could have a decent chance to CAC 😂

I think that I can sell your "J.A." counterstamped 1854 quarter to John Albanese for $10,000,000. I will only charge you 10% commission!

I’m really going to have to research more about the counter stamps. I have other interesting pieces from my fathers collection that I am trying to gather more information on as well.

It's just a common-date, circulated Peace dollar, worth a small premium to melt with or without the counter-stamp.

These are quite collectible, and the once-BU host coin quite a bit nicer than the heavily circulated one above:

I don’t know how to reply to a certain comment yet, or maybe I don’t have that ability yet since I’m a newbie, lol. @numisma, that’s a great deal for sure 🤦🏼‍♀️ I can secure my deal for the ocean front property in Arizona. 😎
Is there a specific forum to post other links to some interesting coins I’ve found or am I posting them in the right area? I found, what I think is unique, and thankful that there are such great people to either tell me what I actually have.

    @Bryce
My father recently passed away and had a pretty nice collection of “stuff” per say of coins, baseball cards, all the way down to a Pez collection and I don’t think he knew the correct way to store them or the damage that would happen if not stored properly. I have many more pieces that wouldn’t be graded due to circulation damage, but are nice collector pieces. I am a sponge just absorbing as much information as I can. I just assumed it would take away the value or not worth anyone looking at because of the counter stamp, and was shocked to know there are collectors interested in pieces similar but in much better shape. Now the piece you have is stunning and maybe a bucket list purchase, but for now I will just admire the picture.

I'll let this go for a cheap 100k that will also include your 10%. Lol

I'm pretty sure that you'd need to punch that reverse while the obverse is resting in an obverse die in order for it to be so completely unaffected by what is a very heavily imprinted stamp... how did they do it?
    🤯

This is one of the counterstamps I'd really love to get into my collection...

This one in particular would absolutely fit the bill if anyone knows where it resides!
Higher grade examples are priced a bit dearly I'm afraid..🤤

  • BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,823 ✭✭✭✭✭

@jayPem, my photo doesn't show it well but the center of the obverse is plenty distorted. It's not terrible, but even a non-collector could easily see it next to a regular Peace dollar.

Now that would have to be one of the most amazing error coins I’ve ever seen! They are my absolute favorite! Great time for sure. I’m still working on Pennie’s and haven’t even started the nickels, dimes or quarters yet. Finding something like that would be the same odds as winning the lottery. If I knew how to like post I would definitely like it for sure.

Those are not errors. They are damaged. Errors happen during the minting process, not after.

@ERingus ... Some counterstamps are valuable... get a book covering the subject. Like error coins, there is a collector sector for counterstamps. Cheers, RickO
