if you do, post here and i can provide a solution for at least firefox. i use version 88.

i love drag n drop and has contributed to a significant portion of my image database.

it is possible this solution has nerfed youtube thumbnails though.

ya i was trying that for a while but wore me down after trying to do quantity. that .webp (heic?) format is onery.

edited to add: i don't even have a image viewer that seems to be able to handle the images. it opens them by default in paint and when i try to select a different default program, it only gives me browsers and image editors as options. :s

Typically when you encounter a webp image you can right click/context click it and open in new window. Then you’ll get a jpeg image to copy.

ya, it is weird. i tried that and it does say .jpg or .jpeg in the url but still saves as webp (or drag n drop) since it is a browser setting INTENDED to convert images into this format. not sure which version of FF enabled this but it is not favorable. imo

if it didn't kill the youtube thumbnails when looking through videos, i'd just change the boolean setting and leave it, like i did this morning but i watch a ton of vids on the tube of you and if i switch browsers, i lose the ability to use my nearly 2k bookmarks and i really prefer them on the left of firefox compared to other browsers.

if i reinstall to another FF version that doesn't have this setting THEN i have to go and redo all the dozen to two dozen settings that i have tweaked PLUS all the addons and their settings. ugh

its too bad as i've been doing these same methods for 15+ years or so. (including reinstallation of previous versions of windows to get to a factory state 1-2 times a year and that worked wonderfully for many years. i have YET to do this on a win10 device.

what is even the default program to use for this new and "improved" image format? no worries, it is rhetorical.

perhaps it is also the evils of win10 that is fighting back. i know a lot of people complain pretty much about every version of windows one way or another but tbh, i thought vista through 8 were pretty decent and i'm a pretty active/diverse/flexible person.

I have always had a problem saving webp images, I use Chrome as a browser most of the time.
I had a work around that worked for me and that was to use IE, it seemed to automatically convert it to a JPEG.
IE doesn't even want to load well anymore and support is ending in a few weeks anyway.
I tried MS/Edge but it comes up as a webp.
I tried what @MsMorrisine & @TurtleCat said. (Thanks for the suggestion)
The copy and paste doesn't give me an option to paste and open in new window still wants to save as webp. :/

You have to do it on the image itself to get the jpg. Take a look at https://www.howtogeek.com/325864/how-to-save-googles-webp-images-as-jpeg-or-png/

if i didn't above, i concede that i can drag n drop into paint but one of the biggest reasons i DND is so i can zoom in quickly with the image viewer to offer all my unsolicited opinions about other people's coins or stuff they find and are looking for confirmations about varieties/grades/authenticity etc. and NOT being able to offer unsolicited opinions is just NOT an option

I experience that issue in Microsoft Edge browser so I switched to Chrome browser and the issue for me has been resolved.

These situations (as discussed) are beyond my skills... I just copy and paste... mostly, though I have dragged/dropped a few. Never encountered a problem... but my pictures are known to be of - let's be kind - lessor quality. ;):D Cheers, RickO

i'm going to put this here from lack of a better place to put it and it BLEW MY MIND.

win10 just never ceases to amaze me how far up out butt it tries to go but when a shut down is NOT a shut down, well that just has TONS of implications. i know we all like fast startups but NOT at any cost.

so as off-topic as it is, we'll just call it a PSA. (hard to understand him at first or you can find someone else that talks about this)

edited to add. while we're off-topic (but useful), here is something to check for you smartphone heavy users (or perhaps with kids that use your phone often)

my charger port is still quite clean along with the lock button but the speaker and headphone holes needed some basic attention.

It is now doing it on Chrome too when I save photo. But here is another simple solution that works for me......
Right click on the image and select "Search the web for image" and another window will pop up with the photo you wanted save then save it as jpeg.
    Hope this helps....

It will take time to get used to webp. The funny thing is that for files above a certain size, webp is actually larger than jpeg, so I imagine the webp file for coin photos would generally be larger.

Given the following instructions, it seems like using IE or Safari all the time could be one option.

    Using a Different Web Browser

Some browsers—Microsoft Internet Explorer and Apple Safari—still don’t support WebP. So, if a website uses .webp files, it has to serve JPEG or PNG versions of those same images to Safari or Internet Explorer. Getting JPEG or PNG versions of the image on a website is often as simple as just opening it in Safari or IE and then downloading the image from that browser.

From a webpage that contains a WebP image, highlight the URL, right-click it, then click on “Copy.”

Fire up another browser that doesn’t support WebP, right-click the address bar, then click “Paste,” and hit Enter.

If the website does the proper server-side conversion, the page will look the same, but this time all images will be in either JPEG or PNG format.

Right-click the image, then click “Save Picture As.”
