1914 Ten Dollar Indian Head Gold Coin

I have had a 1914 Ten Dollar Indian Head gold coin now for about 60 years. When my grandfather passed about 10 gold coins were found wrapped up in a cloth in his night stand and that was the one given to me. I don't really have any reason to keep it anymore so I am thinking about selling it but I honestly have no clue on how to go about that. Do I need to get it graded first? I know the one thing I wont do is take it to a business that buys and sells gold coins! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: Not the best of phone pics and not the best of light but it's a start.

Lets try again with Box.

Welcome to the forum, buying and selling here is biased on trust and as a new member if you want to sell your coin some long standing members may be ask you to ship the coin before payment is sent. Also a feature of the software is that you will have to wait a couple of days before you will be able to post photos, and it will be very important for you to provide good clear in focus photos of both sides of the coin. The entire gold Indian series of coins have been heavily counterfeited for years so members will want to be able to see what you have to offer.

No you do not need to have it graded but understand that for a raw coin part of the negotiations between you and any potential buyers will be to come to an agreement on a grade for the coin as that is a large part of what drives the value of the coin. My suggestion is when you can post some photos in the US coin section of the forum and ask the members what grade they think the coin is, hopefully you will get a consensus opinion on grade which will make it easier to determine a proper value.

Also if you have a coin dealer in your area you could request a grade opinion from that dealer to also help you decide on an appropriate value.

Just my two cents... I wish I had a $10 Indian that my grandfather used to own.
    Priceless

I totally understand and if I had children I would not sell it. All that's left is my mom and she is 98 and my older brother who has his own coin or two from the collection. If I had someone close to me who would appreciate it, I would surely pass it on but unfortunately I do not.

@tsfrance There are a lot of knowledgeable people here. Posting a picture would clarify if it is authentic and worth grading. Good Luck!

  • I have added links to pics in my original post.

Its just a place like imgur but imgur seems to have changed. I will find a different way though. Maybe Amazon.

You can use the testing forum to take pictures and post there, This way you try posting pictures and work on improving your quality of taking the obverse and the reverse shots. Good luck.

  • Ok so the reason I am not able to embed a photo is that I have not been accepted yet and do not have full privilege's. So when that happens I will be able to embed a photo and no one will need to click on any link.
