S.S. Central America Coins

Hello
My father passed away and left me his coin collection which consists of an 1856-S $20 AU 55 17D Full Ser, S Tilted Rt and an 1857-S $20 AU 55 20E Broken A. My question is what does the description mean?
Thank you for your help!

Year, denomination. Grade, variety
do you know for example what the 17D Full Ser, S tilted rt and the 20E Broken A would mean?
Welcome to the forum!
Your first coin 1856 S
The AU-55 is the grade showing it is About Uncirculated
The 17D is a Variety/Die/Listing Number
The Full Serif and S Tilted Right are describing the variety.
If you look at the mint mark on this coin compared to your 1857 you will see the S mint mark on the back is set further to the right and has a little tilt.
Your second coin 1857 S
The AU-55 is the grade showing it is About Uncirculated
The 20E is a Variety/Die/Listing Number
The Broken A is describing the variety.
If you look at the A in States you will see the crossbar is broken.

"17-D" is the variety number - according to PCGS, there are 18 varieties for that date. "Full Ser." would be for full serif on the mintmark. "S tilted rt" would be for the mintmark tilting right.
Mark Feld* of Heritage Auctions*Unless otherwise noted, my posts here represent my personal opinions.
I am guessing that the 17D and 20E might be die parings. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on double eagles will answer that.

Full Ser would indicate a full serif on a letter, maybe the mintmark for example.
Broken A would mean a letter, in "STATES" or "AMERICA" for example is "broken" or not complete.
These are just minor varieties that some pay attention to but many others do not.
Here they are listed in the PCGS price guide.
@Bekko ... Welcome aboard. You have the answers to your questions above. Cheers, RickO
Kudos to all you guys who took time to be helpful.
wow thank you everyone!! they are super cool coins!
My dad left me a bunch of coins would it be safe to say the pcgs and ngc certifications are the fair price of the coins?
Your best bet is to check sold listing on auction sites like ebay, Heritage & Great Collections.
Price guides are a guide to give you an idea but the market changes faster than the price guides.
eBay allows me to see sold listings but also what others are wanting. With that and pcgs, ngc numismatic news, coin world, Mix em together and you will get a good idea. Post pictures here and we’ll do our best to help.
Your father did you a very nice thing. I was told to be a good caretaker and learn to handle, store and grade my “keeps “ . You are doing well.
🎶 shout shout, let it all out 🎶
Don’t know if you know
These are shipwreck coins brought up from the ocean floor
He sure did do me a very nice thing i will not sell them
I do know they are shipwreck coins as well i have a video and a book on them he was very proud of those coins
Super cool that somebody comes here with interesting/valuable coins, and gets great information about them.
Much better than coming here with a parking lot find, and being told it is worth only the face value!
