There are many ways to do it. By year, players, teams and so on. How do you sort your cards?
I collect hall of fame rookie cards, https://www.instagram.com/stwainfan/

I start by sorting boxes by sport, then key cards in the front, then rookies, then base towards the back.
Assuming they aren't in a set:
Non Graded:
70's and junk wax: Star/HOF rookies in one box alphabetically, then HOFers/stars sorted by player.
Modern/Ultra modern: Aall rookies and prospects in a box alphabetically. Stars by player.
Rest go to friend's kids, Goodwill, or to start the grill.
Graded:
By year, alphabetically
Autos
By year, alphabetically
By year by card #.
All graded and in wooden boxes built for graded cards. Sorted alphabetically

I sort from highest value to lowest.... from 2 million down to 150k.... thats just how I roll....
Wow!
My head between my knees and my arms around my shins.
That’s how I roll.

My Patrick Roy PC is in order by year, and then alphabetically by set, subset and insert for each year. The rest of my cards are separated by sport, but no special breakdown from there.
Main collecting focus is Patrick Roy playing days 85/86-02/03, expect 1/1, National/All-Star stamped cards.PC Completion: 2,548/2,952; 86.31% My Patrick Roy PC Website:https://proy33collector.weebly.com
Hey 51Wheaties,
My knees are so screwed up; I don't think that I could put my body in that type of position to sort cards.
My low-end base (all baseball) is in 5k boxes by year, then brand, then alphabetically by last name. Low-end HOF is in another box alphabetically by last name. Mid-end vintage/inserts/rookies are in another box in top loaders alphabetically...one box for baseball, one for football.
For graded cards, sorted by major categories: Player Runs, Cubs, Bears, and "Miscellaneous" players. Within those categories, ordered by year. All stored in graded card boxes. A handful of favorites go into a 35-card display case hanging in my office.
For raw cards, modern commons and junk wax go into a box or to kids/friends. Vintage, Stars, Hall of Famers, signatures, and rare inserts/parallels go into 3-ring binders, top loaders, or magnetics
By height.
