I saw this 1987 Lincoln Cent with an S mintmark for sale. Only proof Lincoln cents from that year had the S mintmark, yet this one looks like a circulation strike to me. Is this some kind of error?

It is probably a proof that has been whizzed or otherwise harshly cleaned. Note how some of the zinc appears to be showing through.
A proof that has been messed with.
Can you post pictures outside of the cardboard holder
@291fifth Good point. If it was whizzed or harshly cleaned, they did a good job, because it looks just like a normal MS cent
@MsMorrisine These are the only pictures that I have

It's just an impaired proof. Sometimes it's hard to find a market for low value, individual proof coins, so they can get spent at face value. Yours is a normal proof that spent time in circulation.
The mintmark is correct for a 1987-S Proof. It was probably spent because it wasn't a Cameo.

Maybe a well-circulated proof?
its a proof, that been circ'd , handled, mishandled, maybe even a fish tank retrieval.
I dump countless proofs daily , proof sets dont sell, so i break most up and spend them.
Yep... That is a mistreated proof.... Can see the zinc.... Cheers, RickO
Years ago I got an impaired proof 64 nickel in circulation. Not that odd.
Note:
Pictures in the holder are useless

Guilty! I spent a bunch of them recently.
What was the asking price for that 1987-S cent?
So this coin was actually listed on my website. It was listed in the proof cent section but was suppose to be listed in the "bargain bin" section for 50 cents. In the craziness of listing 100s of new coins, it was put in the wrong spot.
This is just a cleaned proof cent that spent time in circulation. We list these in our bargain bin section because I have people who buy them to make jewlery with.

This just confirms my belief that every coin has a buyer/market/use. The trick for many coins is finding that niche purpose.
I agree all coins have a home somewhere. I have a list of customers that only buy cull coins for various reasons!
