Difficulty acquiring penny boxes? No banks will sell them to me.

Hello, this is my first post on this forum so I hope I did everything right!

I have been enjoying searching through pennies boxes (I have only done three so far) but I have a problem. Only one bank is giving me boxes. I've called and drove to about 15 different banks but besides PNC bank, they have all told me that they only sell to business customers. PNC, which I am not even a member of, has been great but not even my own bank will sell me boxes.

Some banks I've tried: Chase, 5/3, Charter One, BoA, and Huntington.

Am I doing something wrong or is there something I am missing? Any bank recommendations?

Thanks,
Nathaniel

Ok, good. That was my concern, that you had burned bridges.

Not sure what to say. Some banks are not so accommodating due to the supposed coin shortage.

One idea might be to ask for rolls. They might be thrilled to get rid if loose rolls, especially if another another customer has just dumped some on them

A couple years ago I asked at my bank and they said they had to order boxes and it cost them more than face delivered to them. Maybe ask at your local bank how much it would cost you to have them order one for you, and then decide if it is worth it to you.

A couple years back, I could get all the boxes I wanted with no hesitation. Now, with the ‘shortage’ they are more reluctant to sell full boxes. Depending on the branch, I could still get boxes from branches I have good relationships with. With other branches, I mostly as for 10 rolls and depending on the teller’s stock and when they got a shipment they may or may not sell to you.

Good question. I guess you can just ask the teller if they have any penny rolls. If they do, you can negotiate from there. Some will be ecstatic to get rid a hoard that someone just dumped on them.

I have a bank that does not like to give out customer wrapped rolls - they send them all back to be machine counted/wrapped. If you sense this is am issue, let them know you'll be happy to take CWRs. They might actually think you are doing them a favor.

    Hi and
    Welcome to the forum.
Yeah, this is an on going problem that us CoinRollHunters face periodically.
For me, I too run into some difficulties with banks as well. However, I've been pretty lucky at the most part. It's really just a crap shoot. I've been fortunate to have at least 5 banks, that supply me with all sorts of denomination bank boxes. I know about the gas problems, right now but you may have to keep searching in various locations you haven't been at? Here's the secret in being successful.

    Always works for me, anyway.
Good Luck in finding the cooperative banks and Good Luck in hunting down those little gems in the boxes.

Don't want to rub it in but after posting my comment on your thread, I went to my bank and picked this up! Sorry :/

Try taking in your rewrapped searched rolls and offer to trade for other rolls.

That way the bank still has the same amount of change.

WOW, I remember going to the back when I was 8-10 years old, going inside and finding a teller that looked pleasent. Then I would put my $5 on the counter and ask for 10 rolls of pennies. Then I would go outside the bank and start looking through them. Of course, when I was doing it they were all wheeties..............

What do you do with the cents when you are done searching them?

I have actually not turned them back in yet, I just poured them all in a water jug, I'll roll them at some point. When I do, I plan to turn them into my main bank where I don't get rolls from. Don't worry, I know not to get and dump coins at the same bank.

I suppose the coin shortage might be a part of it. I'm just worried that PNC may stop selling them to me. I come in weekly. I also suppose that I could go around and get some rolls. Customer wrapped rolls might yield me some nicer results! Thanks for you advice. How many rolls would be acceptable to get at each bank?

Looking for new what? Coins? Definitely not, looking for wheaties, varieties, etc.
If you meant banks, I could definitely use some recommendations.

I'll have to look in to ordering boxes. Thanks!

Ah I had honestly forgot about the coin shortage before posting this! I suppose that is likely a big deterrent in getting boxes.

Wow, wish I could have grown up in a time when most of the older coins weren't pulled yet. Can't imagine how easy it was to find silver in the 70''s or 80's!

It wasn't easy finding silver in the 70s and 80s. I started as a young kid in 1970 and even then, finding silver was a big deal. Even wheat pennies were a special find, especially anything older than 1940. Only thing old and somewhat easy to find were 1938-1959 nickels (except war nickels). 40% halves weren't that hard but they were barely worth a premium and there was little interest. No sense in saving something like that when you could buy 5 packs of baseball cards or candy bars.

In the early 70s, it seemed that everything was a 1964/64D nickel or 1965-67 dime/quarter. I did get a 1938D nickel in XF at the elementary school cafeteria once

@nhofer... Welcome aboard. Roll hunting is great fun, and many members here enjoy that part of the hobby. I used to roll search half dollars....stopped though, minimal success. Have fun... Cheers, RickO

Did people pull silver that early on that even in the 70s it was a big deal? I had no clue!

Thanks! I have definitely enjoyed it so far. Nothin better than getting some keepers for face value!

Some of the so-called coin shortage coming from the hacks who are accumulating warehouses full of pennies, waiting for the day when it is legal to melt the coppers so they can cash in. Gotta wonder where they get their pennies from if not from banks.

I was stationed in Alaska 70 -72 and I collected coins then. The lady that filled the vending machines in our snack bar would save silver for me (she got a lot of change to fill the change machines) and I would pay $1.25 per dollar so that was pretty good for her and all she had to do was pull it out of the machines. I didn't get a lot of silver during that time but a bit.

I used to find a lot of 40% halves and could sell the to the local coin store for 55 cents each. Hey, a nickel is a nickel.

Premiums have gone up a lot as has silver. Any silver you pull out of a Coinstar is a treat and a present.
