I'll give you the first four but Walton? Even when he was semi-healthy, he was "only" a 17/13 guy in the NBA. And he played just 468 games with a significant portion of those coming off the bench.

I get that Walton was injured for much of his career but the fact is that his career just wasn't that great.

    Kevin McHale was better.

Got to be in the top five, but Jerry West may have something to say too

    I'd go...
    1. Larry Bird
    2. Jerry West
    3. Dirk Nowitzki
    4. John Havlicek
    5. John Stockton

    Honorable Mention:
    Pete Maravich,Chris Mullin,George Mikan,Bob Cousy,Dolph Schayes,Kevin Mchale

I also think Luka Doncic has the skillset now at age 23, that if he puts in the length of career some of these players listed above have, he'll be high on this list. Its scary how good he is already at such a young age.

I was actually guessing, my NBA history skills are lacking

Dave Cowens and Chris Mullen want some love too

No Steve Nash? Or am I thinking he was better than he actually was?

EDIT: Oh wait, or was it John Stockton that was pretty darn good? Either way..........

Joker. Mix and match any of the bottom 4. Me thinks that many folks here stopped watching basketball 20 years ago. Flame suit on. :-)

How about the greatest white USA born american citizen basketball players.

As time goes by this particular group of basketball players is heading towards extinction.

Dang man, Let's not go there. There will always be great players of all races. The original poster asked an interesting question about a sport that has fewer white folks overall. Who are your favorite players? U.S. born or otherwise?.

If you don't know about Pistol Pete Maravich, then I suggest you study him, he was an absolute genius.

Pete Maravich could go off on opposing teams and score 50 or 60 like it was nothing, he could score from anywhere on the court, and he still holds all of the college records and he didn't even play as a freshman. He got injured in the NBA and it ruined him. Julius Erving said Pete Maravich was the most skilled basketball player he ever saw. Pete Maravich is one of the greatest scorers and ball handlers the game of basketball has ever seen, there will never be another Pete Maravich.

Like it says on the cover of his biography, he should have been the greatest player to ever play the game.

  • GoldenageGoldenage Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭✭✭

Dr J once said he and Pete played a lot of one on one in their ABA days and they both won and lost the same amount.

We all love Pete. But how does he beat out Larry ? My heart would love to put Pete #1, but my mind says Bird and I don’t believe it’s close.

Bird, West, and Pistol Pete are locks. The other two you can put in a number of names.

He could be high up the all-time list of all players

    Top three...

    Bird
    Maravich
    West

Everyone else is battling for #4.
