Rationalization for the mint to produce 2021 Washington Quarters with two patterns.

Is there a reasoning made available by the U.S. Mint to produce two separate quarters with different obverse and reverse designs? The expense must be substantive. I know that the Tuskogee Airmen was the last America the Beautiful designs and that we return to a different design but why both in the same year requiring the date to be on the reverse for the T.A. coin and obverse for the Delaware version. I do not know if that has ever been done before, correct me if I'm wrong. Not really a problem, just wondering if a discussion was made offering the two designs and why the mint thought it imperative to do.
Hope Roger sees this.

To be honest, I had not even realized they were both in the same year.
In any case, it's usually due to whatever Congress authorizes or mandates.
And there are many examples: 1921 silver dollars, 1909 cents, 1913 nickels, 2021 Silver Eagles, to name a few.
@JBK
I understand with totally different coins(actually I don't) but I'm speaking of the same coin with same date on the obverse of one and the reverse of the other. Just seems odd.

All of the state quarters and national parks, etc. had the dates on the reverse. It was mandated in the authorizing legislation, I believe.
I really like the 21 Delaware quarter because it has that pre-2000s obverse that will now be gone forever after this one single issue. The obverse is almost high relief, at least in comparison, and just has that classic Washington obverse.

I can only guess that they wanted to keep the ATB circulating mintages close to the averages across all designs. A full year of Tuskegees would be way more than the others. Even though not an ATB, I thought they would have produced Washington crossing in a 5 oz puck, They probably would have sold out of that production,

Edgar, I have never really been interested in the 5 ouncers but as soon as I read your post I realized that this would be the one I would hunt down. Another swing and a miss by the mint.
Great observation on your part 😉
While were here. So It appears no 5 oz Womens quarters. What do you think the Ornament quarters are?
Are they going to get interrupted after the first 6-7 issues and disappear. Maybe they will do us like they did with the W nickels. Stopped one coin short of at least completing the nickels. They got the 3-W pennies but just couldn’t produce the 3rd W nickel.
We shall see 🤨

The ATB quarter series spilled over into early 2021 with the last quarter, the TAs. it's design was in keeping with the series. Keep in mind that most if not all of the TAs were likely struck in late 2020 to be ready for early 2021 release. To fill the gap until the issue of the Women's series in 2022, the Crossing the Delaware was issued with a change in obverse design. Note that the new Women's design carries another obverse design, this time with Georgie Boy facing right. 2021 marked the first time in many years that less than four quarters were issued during the year.
But have there ever been a year in the quarter history than 2021, that the date was on both the obverse and the reverse of issues for that year, whether different designs or not?

That happened in 2021, no?
Thanks, corrected.

You can thank Congress. The mint had nothing to do with it.
It was the law if I remember correctly. Wish they would have kept the Crossing the Delaware going forward.
I stand corrected. I remember now, congress approves the goofy design and the mint messes up the production. 😂

No, but the date was always on the obverse until the state quarters and then it was always on the reverse. I'm not sure what the significance of the date move is to you.
Any time something has never been done before is interesting to me. Maybe in 40 years others might be iinterested.

In 40 years, it might have happened 10 more times.
Well, the first time took 230 years, so who knows.

Well.... While I do not think it will become a numismatic collectors issue, I will put away a set just to mark the occurrence. Cheers, RickO
