Example of how price guides can be off

I just want to share an example of how guides sometimes can be off. I just purchased a ngc vf35 1879cc top 100 VAM 3 capped cc. The following are prices from various sources that I always use.
Pcgs $1,075-
Greysheet $850-
Cpg $1,090-
Ngc $335- (note this coin was recently graded and has the wrong reverse picture online)
I know that guides and the prices mentioned are not absolute. Coins could have the same grade but look totally different and thus prices will be different for each coin depending on what the buyer likes.
I would have loved to pick up this coin for $335- but that didn't happen.
I am still happy with my purchase. 🙂

Nice pick-up. Price guides are guides; they are not laws or contracts. They reflect the past, not necessarily the present or future. They are created by humans who are prone to make errors. Thank you for attending my TED talk on price guides.
Greysheet always been my go-to and I find they are a good target to hit if purchasing a coin.
I just do research... Price guides, closed auctions, open auctions.... Unless it is an insignificant buy (That means low price). Cheers, RickO
The price guides at NGC are not usually updated for varieties or VAMs and that seems to be why it is so low in this case. The $335 is likely for a 1879-CC in VF35 without the VAM IMO.

Agree
I always use the NGC web site and rarely pay more than what they say. Maybe if its a older style holder. But that is what I use in determining how much to pay.
Price guide is for reference only I think. It is not purchase bible. I just checked on a eBay fake coin, price guide for that coin is 75000 but the fake coin is offered for 6k. By the way I reported this fake coin on eBay but eBay ignored it. I think the real coin value could be half million.

It’s actually for a VF20, which is half the price of a VF35. Not a fair comparison the OP gave. Even still it’s too low but not that many VF20 79-CCs trade so the data is old.
The difference between the capped CC and not has never been that great, maybe 5% difference. That price was old and you would find a hard time getting a clean 79cc in vf35 for $335, even years ago.
