Hi guys,
Me and my grandson, Daniel, were waiting in the car for my wife. She was grocery shopping at Walmart. Daniel was in my glove compartment rummaging through it. He pulled out this Chuck E Cheese Token! I forgot I had some in there? Lol.
Do you guys collect these too? I have assorted dates. Here is my 2009.

"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!

    I don't collect them myself but there is a dedicated group of Chuckie Cheese token collectors.

    I have never been to a Chuck E. Cheese, never even saw one.... and never had a token.... That is one odd ball I have not found in a Coinstar. Definitely an experience I intend to not have. :D;) Cheers, RickO

    That's a great website.

    It says that it has not been updated since August 2020. Are you out if things to add, or have you moved on?

    I especially like the page where it explains what is needed to have a full set within each category (type, all issues, etc.).

  • JoeLewisJoeLewis Posts: 1,907 ✭✭✭✭

    I have a few tickets that I recently discovered left to add, but the tokens are pretty much all locked in. I haven’t seen or heard of any others existing.

    The Field Guide is actually more up to date than the website. Life happens and I never seem to get around to it.

    Several years back Chuckie quit using the tokens and went to a swipe card where after you played a game you could swipe your card and whatever you won, in token worth, was added to your balance, then you could exchange your card balance for "free" gifts and prizes. The Chuckie Cheese Pizza place in Douglasville, GA closed and was torn down. I don't know about the rest of the franchise.

    Yea. Me too.

    My grandkids loved the place. I just sat there and put up with it all.

    I believe that the CEC tokens are as collectable as any other, and that the date only adds to their interest for some.

    I used to take my kids there 15-20 years ago. Yes the Pizza sucked, but the kids had a good time. I used to save one of each diff date, but they're buried in a box somewhere.

    Tokens are considered Exonumia and a part of Numismatics. Not for everyone (I have little interest in stuff like this), but if there is no reason why it shouldn't be discussed on a coin chat site, IMO.

    OK, this thread got me to go through what's come in world/token lots in the last few years Thanks @joeykoins

    @JoeLewis Here's the breakdown.

    1979 = 4 (Reno, Nevada, Stockton, CA (3 dots), 2x San Jose, CA)
    1980 = 2 (Sunnyvale, CA, other without location)
    1981 = 28 (3x San Jose, CA, 4x San Diego, CA - 21 without location) 4x 3D Obv, 13x Pilgrim Hat MM, 1 Fan touches, 1 No circle around (c), one "value",
    1982 = 10 (All without locations, 6 without circle on (C) - 2 look like different font (sunk lines in middle of date/IPWT - thought it was doubled at first glance)
    1983 = 4 (All thick-lettered adult head)
    1984 = x
    1985 = 3
    1986 = x
    1987 = x
    1988 = 2
    1989 = 1
    1990 = 2 WAKCBAK/WAKCBAK Small and a CEC -Guide says small, but the (R) is same as other Large ones
    1991 = 5 (2x Copper Plated Large (R)'s)
    1992 = x
    1993 = 3 (2x Small (R)'s)
    1994 = 1 (Small (R))
    1995 = 3
    1996 = 2
    1997 = 4
    1998 = 1
    1999 = 10
    2000 = 3
    2001 = 4
    2002 = 3
    2003 = 4
    2004 = 5
    2005 = 5
    2006 = 2
    2007 = 8
    2008 = 6
    2009 = 12
    2010 = 7
    2011 = 6
    2012 = 9

    And 4 Showbiz Pizza Tokens (All type 2)

    So 163 total - not quite ready for another kids day out - I took over a thousand last time.

    The locations make sense, as the biggest token lot I bought came from California. Decent mix of obverses/heads and reverse types/fonts, etc.

    No nickel or colored or aluminum ones in the mix, none of the rarer smaller diameters or special tokens.

    It's crazy looking at completed eBay sales - some single tokens go $40+ a ton that sold in that $15-$20 range then another pretty big group selling $5-$10 each.

    I didn't see anything your guide calls a rarity 4/5 - maybe a couple of 2/3's and a ton of 1's. I'll put the 1's in a bag for the kids and start paying more attention to these varieties for sure!

    Awesome! Hunting, discovering, and cataloging these tokens was some of the must fun I’ve had in 35 years of coin collecting!

    Wow! This post from 12 years ago shows when I got interested in these tokens and began collecting them!

    This is fantastic, and that's a great website! I hope arcade tokens get a spark of interest from collectors since the whole arcade industry is going the way of the dinosaur. One of my favorite books in my numismatic library is an arcade token collector's guide.

    Like the rest of society the amusement center market is moving to card systems. A card system allows a myriad of promotional flexibility and significant service and labor savings. Expect to see fewer tokens in use generally for amusements.
