Odd looking fake slab. Funny they used a real certification number for a real coin.
I wouldn't characterize that as funny. Using a real cert number causes some people to let their guard down and become more susceptible to being scammed.

Stuff like this makes me MAD! and I'm not anywhere in the realm of a serious collector.
Another thing this does is when very many people gets scammed with Basement Casements (Fakes-N-Fakes) more people lose faith in slabbed graded coins in general, its becoming part of our real world Matrix, what's real, what's not.

I've only seen counterfeit coins in fake slabs, so to see a genuine Mercury dime in a faux PCGS slab is somewhat interesting. What was the BIN, if you don't mind me asking?
I'm not good on these dimes.
But I'm going with the fake on the left, mainly because of the poor quality tag, (UPC CODE)
Also, WHIZZED I'm thinking polished shinny, the one on the left MAYBE hasn't been WHIZZED?
I've read the the 16-D dime is the second most counterfeited US coin, just behind the 09SVDB.

Don't know a lot about NGC holders.
Why don't you just tell me what to look for, prefer PCGS holders since thats all that I collect
I find this thread scary...............

Yeah, but we're talking about fake Holders
Coin on the left is fake- bad date and profile. Holder appears bad as well- there are differences when looking closely at the authentic holder on the right and the bar code didn't scan.
And look at the coin orientation of the reverses! The coin/ slab on the right is the genuine example from the NGC on-line cert.
NGC is quick to respond when these things are reported to them (especially my contact):
Ok, Lets take the 1945 Merc mentioned above, when I put the cert number in it matches, so how I do I know that the holder is fake? And the coin is fake?

all the information needed is provided in this thread. the image of the inserts solidifies it, lock, stock and barrel.
one of the most consistent tells is the improper thickness of the fonts along with it being off just enough to grab your attention. (i wouldn't have minded seeing a/some authentic examples of this generation of holder.
i did hesitate at first since the coin does appear authentic from the image. i wondered if it was sent in for reconsideration and kept the same cert # but put in an updated holder (for the time it may have been submitted).
even if I/we were mistaken on one now n then, the answer to the question that should be obvious besides stating specifics, is the unquantifiable, """experience"""".
if i could have seen the listing while it was up, we would have a bit more information but no one linked the seller page/fb/active listings etc. probably wasn't necessary.
if you are wanting to learn there is NO better teacher here than the archives and the literal thousands of threads packed with priceless information on a myriad of subjects, including counterfeits and how to detect/identify them.
Really already saw the genuine image in the link provided; I am one who likes to see the "whole story" with the entire slab/ coin/ label for comparison. Maybe it is just me...

I think the BIN was 18k ish. I can't recall exactly. Was definitely somewhere between 15 and 20k.
Glad to see it pulled quickly... We definitely have been getting results on these - but it is a never ending battle. Cheers, RickO
Do you have photos of the reverse? Was it truly a full bands 1945?
