Maybe my first counterfeit Peace Dollar=opinions

al410al410 Posts: 2,402 ✭✭✭✭

I knew the coin looked flat when I bought it but a lot of pictures of coins do not reflect the surfaces very well. Anyway it weighs 23.1 g and as soon as I handled it I thought it felt to light. I have several worn silver dollars, much more worn then this and none are this light. Have not taken time to research other fakes and I know seller will refund my money

Looks like a weak strike which is rare for the 27.
Hopefully it was just priced as a cull ...

I bought it to be part of a light cleaning experiment so am more concerned about authenticity then appearance of the coin

Main reason for post was to get opinions and reasons why or why not it is a fake, I already knew it was ugly

Does it have a seam around the rim on the obverse side? It may be like a hollowed-out Trade $/Opium $

It does look like it has a seam

Comparing to other ones not sure if that is a seam? Maybe

It definitely looks like a two piece "magic" type coin.

With that weight, strike and obverse rim, it's gotta be fake, right?

    Get a refund for sure

As far as magic type coin I don't think so as I examined it pretty close, Still hoping for more reasons as why to feel it is fake or is weight enough? I want this info for my own knowledge as getting a refund is not a problem.

Weight is a pretty good indicator

    Look at the tail feathers

The details on the obverse are mushy.

Look at where the rays are supposed to be distinct at the forehead. The short ones are a blob.

Now I have access to my other Peace Dollars and no doubt it is fake. When I stand another peace dollar on end and let it fall over and do the same it is totally different sound, also I weighed another Peace that is worn much more it weighed 26.3 compared to fake at 23.1

Looks like a hollowed out "box" dollar. Many people used these as lockets and some still have the old photo inside. Try to find where it is hinged by pressing down at different places. It might just pop open.

Did you check it for magnetic properties? If an opium smuggling coin, many were made of silver coins(mostly trade $) I have noticed that several of the hollowed coins did weigh correctly, which was odd. Interesting. Did you try to open it, if hollowed for photos, etc? For some reason, there appears to be quite a few counterfeit 1927 Peace Dollars, but the ones I have seen photos of, appear to have poor fonts, date numbers and lumps on the reverse.

I really think TennesseeDave is onto something

There’s probably a seam and a hidden compartment

No I have eliminated box dollar. I can find no seam and no hinge

You could have it analyzed, but just a waste of time.... obvious fake, points made above... Plus weight. Get your money back. Cheers, RickO
