Hello,
A family member of mine came into possession of this coin and asked me to do some research on it. Mainly he would like to know the proper name of the coin and approximate value. Any help would be appreciated.

Howdy and welcome to the coin boards.
If they are US coins then the best way to get a good handle on rarity, history, grading and approximate value would be to go the any library or bookstore and get your hands on a copy of what we call "The Redbook". I believe it is actually called "A Guidebook of United States Coins". It comes out every year, but you would only need this year as the numbers don't change much, and might cost you $15 at any Walmart, BAM or wherever else.

Ah...that is known as a Susan B. Anthony dollar, or SBA for short. That coin is worth face value.

If it is a wide rim … if … maybe $3
If not then $1

Looks to me like it could be the wide rim.
