Upstate Coin Show Report and 2 Newps

Ok, this may be a little long, but have had quite a search ongoing. I decided I was going to get an 1893-s Morgan to add to my main pl and dmpl set. I have been looking for 2 months pretty hard to find a good coin for a reasonable price. I was initially looking at the 25-35 range, but thought I may go as high as xf40. Anyways, I have had quite a hard time actually spending money, thru no lack of effort. I found candidate number 1 online at a major dealer in a xf40 holder. Made an offer, it is still there, quite an original nice coin, but we couldn’t close the $500 gap in price between us. On I moved to dealer 2, who had one I was going to buy at the asking price in vf30, as it was a good deal. Well, when I tried to buy the coin, the price was adjusted up quite a bit, as the dealer had not updated his website price for this coin in particular. On I went to dealer 3. Again, a coin in vf30 that I would buy at asking price. I called the outfit, a major dealer, and was told to buy it online and I would get wiring instructions from there. Well, I tried multiple times. I created the account, verified my phone number thru a text, but never could get a verification email in my inbox to create the account in order to put the coin in my cart, and thus the coin was never bought. It has since disappeared from their inventory.
So, this brings me to today. My brother, a member here as well, got up this am and drove to Spartanburg, SC for the Upstate Coin Show. There were about 50 dealers there, and quite a nice range of coins. Everything from ancient coins, one very large inventory all in NGC holders I was unfamiliar with. Apparently, some NGC holders on give a grade such as VF and no numerical grade. Learned something new today. A lot of raw coins all over, but most were around $50-300 in value, so it was reasonable to sell these raw. Saw a dealer with hundreds upon hundreds of only ICG graded coins, and most seemed graded well, or at least close to my opinion of their grade. Lots of PCGS coins, Morgans, Barbers, some older dollars as well. Lots of gold, $20 Saints mostly, all in PCGS holders. Not too much really early gold, though. I was in search of my 1893-s Morgan and any pl or dmpl available. I did find a nice 1902 PCGS MS64PL dollar and an 1881-O PCGS MS64+DMPL, but that was after my purchases and passed for now. The crowd was moderate. We all were instructed to wear name tags as we entered. This turned out to be very helpful. Every dealer I walked by looked at me and said “Hi Will, is there anything I can help you with?”. I spoke to many dealers, and every single one was friendly and personable. I even talked to one about kids, schools, colleges, as he lived in the city where I went to undergrad, Durham, NC.
Which now brings me to my purchases. I knew he was going to be there, and found dealer number 2’s table from above. I told him who I was, and he explained the market to me from his perspective, and was very reasonable. So, I looked at 5 of the 7 1893-s Morgans he had, and picked the best one for the price. It turned out to be same one I had tried to get before. I also found a good looking prooflike I liked as well. I traded in 1 duplicate to him, and we came to a reasonable price, he took my check (which is trusting on his part) and both were happy. Anyways, I will go ahead and post my purchases and let me know what you think. It is the first 1893-s I have owned. My brother also found a very nice Barber half, but I will let him share in this thread, or he may do it in the Mike Hayes thread. Thanks for reading.

Looks like the 93-s is a solid coin for the grade. I can see why you ended back at that coin. Congrats!
Nice pickups! Where do you live? I'm from South Carolina, and I went to the Upstate Coin Show last August

Nice Sweet Willie T! I was there with my brother and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Good size and great coins for a South Carolina show. 93-S is nice original no problem coin that looks way better than another VF30 I saw. I got to hear about the adventure searching for the right 93-S as it unfolded. Think you made a great decision on picking this one. Congrats!
Thanks for sharing the coin show experience, I really like the look of that 93-s Morgan, very “wholesome” looking.
Congrats!
It's all about what the people want...
Great report. The 93-S looks nice for the grade. Wish I would have known about the show. Would have been a good road trip.
Very nice look to that 1893-S. Great, even color and no visible hairlines. It’s a big deal for a Morgan collector to finally get that one. Congratulations! I also really like the obverse of that 1888-S. Excellent eye appeal and very clean for a 64.
Nice pick ups! It's great to start getting back to something more normal. You can usually find a Detroit area show every weekend now. I personally find it a great way to spend a weekend morning... fun, relaxing, great to talk to people with a similar interest and those special finds make it all worth while.

Nice show report, thanks for posting it! Love your Morgan pickups, especially your 1893-S. A great coin!
An authorized PCGS dealer, and a contributor to the Red Book.
Thanks for the story and pictures. Great pickup!
Good pick ups for the set. Even in this digital age, it is sometime easier to work out a deal in person as opposed to online. Plus, you were able to see the coin in person and compare it to others, always a bonus.
Purty dirty 30. 👍🏻
Thanks for posting the report, and your perseverance paid off…..that is a great looking 93S dollar!
Thanks for your report, and the 93-S looks very solid. The PL looks really nice too; always tough to photograph though.
Live just outside of Columbia, where are you?
Thanks for all the comments. Definitely easier to make a deal in person than via email.

Cool pick ups!!!!
I also went there today.
Was great to finally go to a show, but unfortunately was there at 4 PM and most folks had either left or were busy packing up.

Thanks for the show report and that is a very nice '83S .... Looks like you did well.... Cheers, RickO
Did I miss some slabbed Barbers? I was there Thursday + Friday morning. I only saw 1 Barber 1/2 that wasn't MS that I wouldn't buy and I didn't buy many! There was an AU 58 1892 quarter but he wanted 3 money for it!
Check out the MikeHayes thread, my brother posted a nice 1914 Barber half he got from there.

As others have stated, that is a very nice and "clean" coin for grade and a coin where the honest wear is not a problem as far as aesthetics. It actually has a much better feel for the Olde West than many higher graded coins. I also like your '88 S!
Well, just Love coins, period.
I live in Chester, which is about an hour south of Charlotte
