Three cent collectors

The three cent piece appears to be very unloved. Finding books on the subject is proving difficult. Any recommendations for must have reading?

The Ultimate Guide to U. S. Three Cent Nickels 1865 - 1889 by Allan Gifford. Book is very difficult to find.

Thanks. I didn’t know about the Allan Gifford book
In the beginning:
And the end:

As per the following link:

There was also an old thread on here about it which had tidbits of info.

Don't have any books on the subject and gathered whatever info I could by searching online. Really liked the 3CN till they started to get pricey
Good luck with your quest.

Not anymore.
You can browse it or download it as a PDF from the Newman Numismatic Portal:
https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/555545
To download, put your mouse over the cover photo.
Just below the upper left corner is an circle icon with 3 dots, like (...) .
Click on it and then select PDF.
I did buy a hard copy before it became available as a free PDF,
and it did take a couple of years of checking ebay before I found one.
It was somewhat of a disappointment, because he focused on RPDs, DDOs and DDRs,
which are "modern" type varieties. RPDs are too small to be identified from most ebay photos.
I prefer to collect by die cracks, which are abundant in this series.
He did do a good job of identifying the different hubs, though.
A couple of years ago, for fun I tried to identify die pairs for the 1866 3CN.
I spent a few days over Thanksgiving week.
I was able to find examples of most of the Gifford varieties.
I found 52 different die pairs and major die states that had 2 or more examples,
and an additional 29 with a single example.
I suspect many collectors who want to "catch 'em all" would find it too hard to get 52 or 81.
But some people might have fun getting as many as they can.
1865 has a higher mintage, so probably many more die pairs.
I tried looking at those for awhile, and I found many different, but it was very hard to find 2 examples of a given crack pattern!
Mostly I did it by reverse crack patterns.
I numbered the leaf clusters in hexadecimal (1 to c),
and the individual leaves in each 1 to 6 .
The 3CN coins are interesting... I have not collected them, focused mainly on larger coins. The more I see them here on the forum though, it seems I have a growing interest. We shall see... Cheers, RickO
I don't have anything against Trickels and think they can be quite nice
Here's one I appreciate! It looks like it could be tab toned!

Here is an online reference to the many varieties of the three-cent nickel piece. This covers just about every RPD, MPD, doubled die etc.
"You can't get just one gun." "You can't get just one tattoo." "You can't get just one 1796 Draped Bust Large Cent."
I have pretty much completed my book on 3 cent patterns numbering about 320 pages that I have been accumulating data and information for about 45 years. Now I have to figure out what to do with it. With a likely interest of about 15 people, half of which would include my children and parents, have to figure out if I want to take the plunge and expense of self publishing.

If you have interest there many more e books omly being published and if u are near a collage it would be a nice study project for a class to help set it up and help publish, set up graphics , text formating proofing etc ... just need a professor and class that has an independent studies.
