Question for $3 gold collectors

Hi Folks,
I know nothing about the $3 gold series.
One of my relatives inherited some coins from his father. He asked me to send a few to the company across the street for grading.
One of them, an 1864, came back MS62.
Based on my reading its one of the more rare $3 gold, esp in MS. It looks to me to be a 5 figure coin.
Is this the case?
I'd appreciate any thoughts on it's value.
Thank u!

    Incredible.

It was in an old flip in a velvet pouch. They just brought it over for kicks thinking it was no big deal.

    So appreciate the info.

Nice looking coin! What was your relative's reaction when they learned the value of what they had inherited?

Man, it's amazing what is still "out there." Cool coin.

Great story and beautiful coin.... Those 'little treasures' are out there... lurking in old collections, jewelry boxes, attic or cellar storage..... Just waiting to be found. Cheers, RickO

Those pics sure make it look awfully sweet for a lowly 62!

The pictures aren’t ideal for assessing the coin’s condition. However, there appear to be conspicuous marks on the face, neck, in the left obverse field and at the central reverse area.

Yep but to me that's perfect. I love a 62 like this that looks to be somewhat PL and well struck with consistent chatter throughout.

Great coin OP what a find by your relative!

That’s a beautiful piece in every way.

Great coin, a little hard to value sine a MS example has not come up since 08/2019 in a major auction. The few that did come up for auction are AU58 at best. Prices have moved considerably higher since the summer of 2019.

Sooooo, you're saying not a MS70, MS69, MS68, MS67. MS66. MS65, MS64 or an MS63... easy MS62 in my book no matter how lousy the picture may be.

I thank you all so much for the information and for all of your comments.

My relative does not want me to mail it back given its value. Thus, I will have it for at least the short. I will post some better photos over the weekend.

    These people are just lucky.

The relative who inherited these coins does not know anything about coins at all.

When I 1st saw some of the coins that he inherited he showed me some of the gold ones, about 15 gold coins. He said his siblings - who also don't know coins - just divied up the gold coins in equal numbers w/no attention to what they were.

I looked at them one by one. There was a bullion Saint, then a Krugerand, then a Maple Leaf, etc. Then, there was a 1799 half eagle. I was like Holy C*$@! Do u know what this is??? He's like no, something special? I couldn't believe it. I wonder what gems his siblings got. I wonder what else he received.

His luck doesn't surprise me though. A few years back he purchased a $20 scratcher from a supermarket vending machine and won $1M - seriously.

He's a great guy though, so at least such good fortune has befallen a good man.

Next time I'm over there I have to see all of the coins that he inherited. He only showed me some of the gold ones because they are the ones that he feels are special. I wonder what other goodies are in there.

Thanks again for all of the comments. They are greatly appreciated.

If I were in your position I might make an effort to contact all the siblings to help assess the collection in aggregate, provide instructions not to mishandle or clean the coins, and give them some idea of value/options to dispostion (sell) or at least preserve (in slabs). I have nightmare visions of someone clueless pulling out an early gold piece and rubbing it to get some dirt off or handing it to a kid to play with, destroying 95% of the value in a heartbeat.

What happened to the 1799 half eagle?

He still has the 1799. I may have sent ot for grading a few years ago when I first saw the coins - I can't remember. I'll ask.

I'll mentioned to him that he should ask his siblings to send pics of their coins. I'll suggest that again. I'd love to know what else is there. Clearly they all thought of the 1799 as nothing more than bullion. They're SO lucky they didn't take it to a pawn or similar shop for just under melt!!

    Hi Guys,
The lighting in these photos is a bit dark but they may capture more details of the coin...

I'll ask him to send me some pics.

I thought that I had some but can't find them in my phone. I first saw some of these coins a during a pre-COVID X Mas (can't remember exactly which one). He only showed me the larger gold coins. The 1799 was mixed in with bullion coins as noted earlier. The first time that I saw these $3 golds was when he brought them by in a velvet bag on Thanksgiving of last year. He didn't mention them a few years back at all.

That looks like it may be an Eagle rather than Half Eagle. If so, that's even better.

Looking at the second set of pictures I can see where it lost a couple points but all in all it's still a great little $3 coin.

Yes, it is a $10 Eagle. Thank you. I should have corrected that when he sent me the pics. As noted, I haven't seen the coin in several years and my memory of it was incorrect.

He says that he has 30 or so gold coins and a couple hundred silver coins from the collection. I've got to get over there some time to check them out.
