not sure what part of the process could cause that "damage" but i hope it is determined acceptable and graded. that is one heck of an error!

The obverse looks AU but the reverse looks MS
The "damage" probably was on the planchet before the strike so the coin is not damaged.

The might holder it as a genuine error,but they might nor assign a grade.
