1990-P Quarter- strike thru or lamination error?

Found this one roll searching today. I believe it's a minor mint error. What would you call this? Thanks.

Perhaps a struck thru large rim burr that fell away.

    Looks struck-through to me.

Looks like a struck thru, but the reverse helps to tell the story in these cases. Is there any distortion on the reverse?

It doesn't have the slice of the rim gone that you see in most rim burr coins. I am thinking it is a struck through coin.

I agree but what is that flap at the end of the struck thru?

Not to my eyes. I'll post a few more shots.

Call me crazy but I am thinking a metal slice from another planchet. Could a rim burr slice detach in the hopper and fall into the presses with a normal planchet?

We have not seen the back side of the coin. Could a rim burr slice from the reverse fold over into the obverse die before pressing? I think this scenario is much less probable, however.

Nice new photos, and I stand by my above statement.

Thank you. Neat! Worth a $1 or $2?

Agree with EOC - looks like it's a detached rim burr,
with a small piece still attached at the top of the
depression. Looks like it was over the rim in the
    same area above.

Struck-in rim burr. I've found quite a few of these in my half dollar boxes, and also several quarters.

Interesting. First I've found but don't roll search that much.

Very interesting.... I thought it was a struck through, but that flap/rim burr was confusing me. Have not seen that before. Cheers, RickO

Another question about this one. I've looked at several examples of rim burs on Google. Many I saw have the copper exposed. How come this one doesn't? Thanks.

  • ctf_error_coinsctf_error_coins Posts: 15,433 ✭✭✭✭✭

The burr that fell away was probably copper.

how about the one on the head that looks like it is connected to the rim and possibly damage to the letter?

Yeah I need to look at that more closely. I thought PMD but will take a closer look.
