Numismatic vandalism. We'll never know why it was done. Whoever did it has probably been dead for over a century.

I’m guessing it happened because someone wanted to scratch an X into the reverse
Perhaps it was used in a 19th century magic trick, and the magician said to mark the penny so that it could be recognized again.
maybe they felt it was a fake
I recently learned when you see many scratches on a 20c piece, it was because cigar smokers often used them. The smoker would cut the tip of his cigar using the coin as a backdrop.
Perhaps there is an equal and neat reason why this Flyer was scratched so.

I admit that I used to sit in HS English class and carve "her" name in Silver Dollars. Great fun and "she" loved them.

Illiteracy was common back then. Perhaps someone decided to sign their name on this coin.

Or carved an X on the coin, so they could dip it in ink, and stamp their name onto important documents...
I have some Canadian nickels with lines across them. I heard it was related to being used in a parking meter.... I like your story better.
It could also be a subtle political statement akin to "not one cent".
Some coin collector wife caught him cheating. 🤔
Hoard the keys.
If the X were on the obverse, we coule speculate that it represents a crosshairs, for hunting eagles.

Turkeys are for bowling.
Eagles are for golfing.
C'mon, the man(yes, man) who had it couldn't decide which side was heads and which was tails. Most coins had the eagle on the back, so he put an X to solve the issue when he flipped for a pint. JAO.

Well if the x line was raised and not incuse you would have quite an interesting coin and story.
As is, maybe they were trying to see if it was plated, those bronze coins looked different than the large cents that came previously..

Yep.. Casual coin vandalism.... At the time, the individual never imagined that cent would one day be valued. Cheers, RickO

What if???
This isn't something new for me to see!
I've done it on occasions myself, I hate it when it happens.
Say your metal detecting a park,
the coin is supposed to be 6" deep.
you can't use anything else to dig with except a metal prob and a 6" bladed garden digger.
you've dug down to the 6" range and haven't found any metal, but the signal is better?
its getting late, your at the point of covering up the hole thinking its a deeply buried piece of copper pipe.
But that signal pushes you on!
now your at 8" down into a very small diameter hole, the target ID is now saying quarter!, but the depth is wrong!
now you down to 9" your pretty certain its not a coin in that area that deep, your back is hurting and at this point whatever the h*** this piece of junk is you just want it OUT OF THE GROUND, or you at lest want to lay eyes on it.
so, you reach 9-1/2" its getting near dark, your probing the hole and you hear hear that sound, so the tip of the prob is out of sight, you do a crisscross on the handle pushing down on the unseen object, if its a rock it will have a gritty scrap feel, glass will have a supper smooth glide feel (two very common items to run into in the ground).
its been determined its not a rock, you dig on and you see that color, now you can recover it, and what you fine is amazing.
I was disappointed at the scratch, but I was glad that I continued on and didn't just leave it behind.
Way back in the day it was common for detectorist to use Ice picks as a coin prob which will scrape (cut) a nearly perfect X on a coin. I use a long small shaft bullet shape pointed screwdriver (dull)

that is painful to see. it is on a coin that by all measure is a rather tough type to find pq and that one looks like a pure gem for the grade. well used to be.
Now it can be a nice album coin, for the budget collector...
ya, face up.
Counter stamped. lol.
Nice coin for an album.
