Father discovered a medieval English gold coin worth a record $875,000 on the first day he tried out his new metal detector

A father was encouraged by his children to take up his old hobby of metal detecting.
On his first day using the new detector he dug up a medieval gold coin from the 13th century.
The coin has sold at a London auction for £648,000 ($878,778).
When his children were born, Michael Leigh-Mallory gave up his passion for metal detecting. Now, 10 and 13, they encouraged him to take up the hobby again. On the first day he used his new metal detector, he found the oldest gold coin in England, dating back to the 13th century.
"The day after it arrived, I went out into this field. It was a bright, sunny day, and within 15 minutes, I found the coin. I knew it was gold, but I had no idea how important it was," Leigh-Mallory told The Guardian.
The 52-year old ecologist and amateur historian had dug up the rare gold penny as it glistened in a field in Devon, South West England, and was advised to take it to the British Museum. It was discovered to be one of only eight in existence, and the last one was found 260 years ago, according to The Metro.
The coin, made from North African gold, was minted in the reign of Henry III, who was the English king between 1217-72.

Sounds too good to be true.
LOOKS LIKE OLD COIN DUG FROM GROUND
Perfect!!!!
Just went into my BongoBongo folder under 'old coin forum famous quotes.'

If he's an "Ecologist" - then why is he digging up the environment he wants to protect??

Removing contaminants!
You know @Steven59, once he digs up his gold prize coin, he puts back the displaced earth back into its natural place.
Yeah, I'm sorry .............
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
His kids probably stole the gold, then persuaded Dad to get back into the hobby, and planted the coin for him to find... 🤔
Them darned Kids (just a random internet picture!)🤔

EDIT: Seeing it's not funny I removed the "LOL"
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
Sarcasm?
Not funny?
Sarcasm?
Certainly not a serious hypothesis. I would say more farcical than sarcastic...
Still not funny?
Is "jealousy' at play here tonight?

What’s the difference between a pirate and a cranberry farmer? A pirate buries his treasure, but a cranberry farmer treasures his berries.

Sure looks nice for being in the ground for 800 to 900 years.
Edit I get 2021 quarters in change that don't look that nice

Are you asking me? I would say a bit funny. But I might be biased.
Don't you think that one missing out of the, at the time, seven known would have been... you know... known about?

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I'm not so certain that I am buying this story.
Looks like someone bought the coin , that’s confirmed 🤨
🎶 shout shout, let it all out 🎶
If I “found” that coin and sold it for almost a million dollars I would prefer remaining anonymous.
Looking at the coin I am wondering what the obv design is. It appears to be a king wearing a jesters cap under the crown and holding a human skull in his outstretched hand. Maybe I have seen too many emeraldTV pictures???

This is what treasure hunters of all types dream about..... finding the big treasure. Metal detectors, wreck divers, cave hunters, and those who track old stories of buried treasure. Cheers, RickO
For this plotline, may we suppose that a clever counterfeit was substituted for the stolen genuine coin? There might be a dishonest numismatist uncle involved as well...
Ok, still not funny?
How about this:
What do you call a dead fly?
A flew.

For what it’s worth, I thought the comment by @moursund about the kids planting the thing was pretty funny! But, I’m admittedly- a little different. ;-)
The laws on treasure hunting in that region are very well defined and do allow a treasure hunter to keep a single coin found. There are strict guidelines and reporting requirements for reporting finds beyond that however. I’m not sure about the details of reporting a single coin. Generally, if rules are followed, the finder is indeed entitled to a healthy stake in whatever booty if found, and is split with the property owner, and local historical entities . The rules however are quite strict and designed to further knowledge of the evolving understanding in the history of the area, as well as protecting the interests of local historians and societies, museums, archeological entities, property owners, taxing authorities and the general public beyond that.
It is a complicated mesh of interests and even at that, the finder DOES share in the spoils IF they follow the rules.
If they don’t, it can get VERY messy.
Below mentioned is a really good article on what can and did happen in one very interesting discovery of a monumental hoard.
Highly recommended!! Lots of discussion of details blend rare coin numismatics along with the details of metal detector etiquette and culture.

It’s also available as a very good narrative audio piece. Though I’m not sure that’s for everyone or just a benefit for those with subscriptions.
