Cold day

Well, glad to finally be on the forum today... Power went out at 04:30 AM and just came back on at 16:55 PM... Just over twelve hours out of power and it has been 20 degrees all day. Was quite chilly in the house, but heat is now back on. Major, major Ice storm... The trees are beautiful, but of course, many have fallen or lost branches, taking out power lines. Good to be back. Cheers, RickO

Wow. Glad the power is back and things are warming up again.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
You didn't post for more than 12 hours?!?
@moursund .... Happens every day, since I am usually on in the morning and not the evening/night. Cheers, RickO
Glad you're safe.
But in all seriousness, this sounds to have been (still is?) a horrendous storm, lots of problems for lots of people. I hope everyone fares as well as you seem to be.
Always look for the rainbow in these scenarios.

Glad to see you connected once again, RickO. Connected with power and connected to our forum!

Hopefully next time you'll get snow instead of ice and it will be blast white everywhere you look.
@airplanenut .... Yep... One of the few good things about a snowstorm....
Cheers, RickO
It is suppose to be 81 degrees here in SoCal on Tuesday
@ErrorsOnCoins....
Yeah, my buddy in Scottsdale, AZ does that to me several times during winter....Cheers, RickO
Here in South Carolina we got about 1/2 inch of snow about a week ago and it was gone the next day. Of course we pay dearly for that in July, and August.
We had lots of snow but didn't lose power at all...luck of the draw. Glad you're powered up and back on the forum!
We are still in the middle of the ice storm. Power still on, but very slick outside. Its going to be 5F degrees by morning . Temps steadily dropping so the ice isn't going away.

Get a wood burning stove. The way the power grid has been in recent years, it might save your life someday. If your generator fails, or fuel is unavailable, you will always have heat.
Assuming you have wood. Or a big enough pile of junk mail. Or I think the USPS will deliver flat rate boxes and such to you for free...?
Glad your back in action Ricko. We wimped out and came to Florida for the winter.
Goodyear blimp just flew over our house. Great weather for the Pebble Beach Pro Am this weekend. 70 degrees and sunny.
Lance.
You need a generic generator.
Hoard the keys.
.
It’s always sunnier on the left coast this time of the year. I’m sitting on the back porch with my fireplace warming the air around me to 73 degrees.

@ricko Glad you've okay. Power outage is no joke. I'm fortunate to have a Vermont Castings airtite fireplace insert with blowers that pushes some impressive heat into our living room. PECO and Asplundt keeps me in wood. Glad your back, be safe. Peace Roy

@Namvet69.... Thanks Roy. This does not happen often. When I lived in WA State, it happened, and I bought a generator that would run the house. Never happened again. House is warm now though, so glad the adventure is behind us... Cheers, RickO
Newport Beach yesterday. It was a bit chilly, temperature was only in the low 60’s at sunset.
After a couple mornings with light frost on Sunday and Monday, it was good to be back to 80 degrees in central Florida today!
Our families back in Ohio are digging out from the 12 inches of snow they received. Fortunately everyone is safe!
Glad you're safe. > @lkeigwin said:
I was stationed just up the road from there at the Naval Postgraduate School. Housing was on Ft. Ord.
Stay safe, and be well...

our ice/snow storm ended yesterday but it will take sometime to melt 1 to 3 inches of snow and a inch of ice under the snow i told my wife to get someone from her work to pick her up as the roads are still icy

@Ricko, we installed one of these whole-house generators several years ago. Auto-on, auto-off. We never lose a moment of power. Every appliance runs, including three freezers, two refrigerators, and three central heaters/AC units.
Great investment. Pay for it with a few of those special coins from the safe room.
Lance.
Is it true the Generac is only good for about 15-20 years? I had looked into one and that’s what the electrical company told me when I inquired about an install. I do have a nice Honda generator and a gas fireplace for heat. My quote was around $8K for a whole house size Generac. Still on the fence, with the way it’s been lately it might be a good idea to get one. I have also heard of people having problems with the Generac. Another reason I haven’t taken the 8K plunge.
Good to hear your back online and with power Ricko. For me it’s such an inconvenience when power goes out.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I think with back up generators, the fuel source and the automatic scheduled maintenance runs are what determines the life of the unit. IMO. Peace Roy

@lkeigwin ... Lance, you are 100% correct... the best way to go. After yesterday, I am seriously looking at that option again. I have been here now for about 14 years, this is the second power outage. The last one was in the summer though. Thanks for your recommendation. Cheers, RickO
Did you get the shakes?
@amwldcoin... No, I avoided that with a huge bowl of homemade chili and a glass of Cabernet....
Cheers, RickO
A Generac may last you that long if you maintain it- here in the Florida elements they take a beating with the sun and rain. I have a Generac at home and at the office and you really need a maintenance company to service it at least quarterly which runs me around $106 per service
plus parts (oil, filters, etc). The control panel on my office generator just went out and had to be replaced after 9 years for around $1200. If you don’t maintain it in good working condition it won’t be there when you need it. I fuel mine through 1000 gallon tanks buried in the yard because there isn’t a natural gas line on my side of the street and tunneling under was going to cost a fortune. I’m glad I splurged and got them but they are an ongoing cost.
Won’t be needing them today- 77 and sunny

My brother lives in Gilbert, AZ. and said he was playing golf wednesday while we got our 15 inches. I'll still take the summers here in the north though
@fiftysevener... I lived in Arizona (Phoenix area) for eight years... Did not mind the summers. I prefer heat to cold... cold hurts. Cheers, RickO
Glad you’re ok now Ricko.
It’s pretty tough and humbling when it’s super cold like that and there’s no supplemental heat.
In prior homes, it was quite like winter backcountry camping with the down sleeping bags and camp stoves! That gets old really fast!
Over the many years here in the PNW, we have been through enough power outages to shiver my Timbers for sure! Some were a week or so in duration too.
Happily, the home we’re in now has a very efficient wood burning stove and a propane stove top for cooking.
I’m thinking of getting a Generator as well though, though not so large as to power the whole house.
Saving the freezer full of food is a strong motivation, and powering a few select items would be nice.
Still thinking it through, and how big to go.

Brrrrr stay warm @ricko......................But I thought you like them Blast White Days

The look after an icestorm is a different, marvelous look. If very sunny, everything glistens.
Here is a picture I took today, after the major ice storm. Cheers, RickO

That is stunning, @ricko. Ice storms are as beautiful as they are treacherous.
I have fond memories of my early life in the Midwest. This picture was taken in February of '79 after back to back 15" snowstorms followed by temperatures near -20f:

I usually have a few power outages every year. Sometimes for 2 or 3 days at a time. I have a Generac GP7500E portable gas generator. I have a transfer switch that I can plug my generator in, and it will give me power to the whole house. I store it in my barn when not in use. I have been using it for many years, and it still runs great.
But plan B is the wood stove. I have some woods at the back of my property with plenty of wood. But I'm kinda lazy, so I just buy a couple cords of wood, and store it in the yard. The thought of losing power for long periods of time in the winter, is the reason that I bought the wood stove. I don't want my family to freeze to death if the power grid crashes. It gives me peace of mind.
@Floridafacelifter. Good that you buried tanks rather than paying for a direct connection. As a Sarasota resident, they shut off all the natural gas inflow when a hurricane is close.

This works for me. Have my house wired where I can plug it in and also buried a propane tank. No winter storms yet but have already put over 12 hours on it in less than a year. It lives in the garage until it’s needed. Added the wood heater around the same time and it’s our primary heat source now!
Good to hear it was only 12 hours. Those ice storms can really cause major problems. We got about 6" from the storm here but 3" of it was sleet. It was 20 degrees and the sleet fell for hours. I didn't even bother shoveling our driveway, the snow is like concrete. The last big ice storm we had here similar to those photos you posted was in 1998. People that lived in the rural areas went weeks without power. I have a small portable generator that I picked up after that storm in 98 but thankfully haven't ever needed it. I grabbed a photo off the net from that 1998 storm - whenever I hear ice storm I think of miles and miles of this...
