1928 Peace Dollar

skier07skier07 Posts: 4,072 ✭✭✭✭✭

I bought this ~15 years ago as a 64 without a sticker. The coin has booming luster which my mediocre at best pictures don’t show very well. I submitted the coin to CAC a few years ago and it received a green sticker. I thought by today’s standards that the coin was undergraded and submitted it to PCGS as + consideration only after reading a @tradedollarnut post who suggested this approach. What’s the likelihood of this coin upgrading to a 65? Does the mark on the neck which is accentuated in the pictures limit the grade?

Nice coin. There is that and the nose hit and up by the rim at 12:30 but I think it’s a nice coin for that grade I would of left the bean so others would pay the bigger money if you ever sell it. Them thinking the same that it may upgrade because of the bean.

It is a nice coin, but I doubt it will get a 65... based on the points already discussed. Send it in to get back the bean and sell it. Cheers, RickO

As a 64+ I think this coin is maxed out. Yes, that mark on the neck limits it.

Agree with the other posters. Probably won't 65.

EDIT it looks like it would be a green sticker candidate

Thanks. I didn’t realize there was a TV which does a good job of accurately portraying the coin.

The coins certification number is the same so I’ll get my sticker back when I send it to CAC since they don’t distinguish between 64 and 64+.

A beautiful coin (now) at the top end of its grade.

Really nice coin with a shot at 65, but I think the graders got it right at 64+. If you did get it in a 65 holder, it would be unlikely to get a green sticker. The rim hit near "OF", the chatter around "UNITED", and the hit along the neck truncation are all issues they'll look at. The slight cheek graze isn't a huge issue. The small reed mark along the neck isn't grade defining. I once owned a 1928 in 65+ that had a similar mark in almost exactly the same location.

To me, the biggest issues here are the reverse rim hit and potentially luster, which is always hard to evaluate in a photo. MS65 is the old "investment quality" benchmark and people will subconsciously carefully inspect a coin before awarding it that grade.

If I was in the market for a 1928 Peace dollar, this is the sort of coin I'd consider buying. It's really quite nice for a 64.

For comparison, here's my old coin. Sometimes I miss it. :)

Just a while back didn’t someone post on here that did the same thing but didn’t get the cac sticker the second time, even with the same certification.
I guess it is not a given ...? Does anyone remember this?

If you send a CAC'd coin for regrade, take a photo of it first! I've submitted many coins to CAC after regrade (successful and unsuccessful) with high-quality photos of the coin in a CAC'd holder. Those that were previously stickered ALWAYS got the sticker back. Some did even if they went up a numerical grade, not just a plus.
