Anyone planning on trying to snag one of the $50 subs??

I understand they are having the lottery tomorrow. Anyone here planning on snagging one? What does one need to do?? Just go to the PSA website and hang out?

    Nope.

I think it happens via social media - Instagram, Facebook, Twitter - and you can jump into that way following the proper PSA account.

I have none of them as I’m not on social media (I’m so weird, right?) and by the time I was tipped off last time I was (I think) too late in the queue to get any. So I think I’ll just wait a little longer and skip these cool live submission events for now.

But I think that’s how you can go about…

    …good luck.

I got an 11:07 email to notify me of one…

…those interested should check your inboxes.

FAQs from said email, straight answered from PSA being better than my guesses.

If I get an allocation, do I have to submit 5 cards? Or can I submit less than that?
No, you do not have to submit all five cards on an allocation. However, you must finalize your submission before you can receive another, new allocation. If you finalize an allocation submission with fewer than 5 items, the remaining allocation will be forfeited. You cannot carry unused allocations over to the next submission. Note that you cannot mix Submission Type on a single order. All cards on the order must be submitted at the same Submission Type (Grading, Crossover, Review).
If I get an allocation, do I have to submit it immediately? How long do I have the allocation before it disappears?
You have 15 days to finalize your submission from the day you receive an allocation. After the 15th day, your allocation will be removed from your account. Once you finalize the submission, you have 30 days to mail it in.
Do I have a better chance of getting an allocation if I get to the waiting room early?
PSA Submission Events are a lottery. Individuals in the waiting room prior to the event start time all have an equal chance to receive an allocation. Whether you are in the room for 50 minutes or 5 minutes prior to the event start, you have an equal chance of securing an allocation. After the event starts, allocations are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. For this reason, you should make every effort to enter the waiting room prior to the event start time.
How do I get to the waiting room? What is the link?
Links will be distributed on PSA’s official social media accounts one hour before the start of each event. Follow @PSAcard on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to access the link.
If I have a membership that has been extended, am I eligible to participate or do I need to get a new Silver membership?
All existing PSA Collectors Club members, including Platinum, Gold and Silver members, are eligible to participate in PSA Submission Events. If your membership was extended, you are eligible to participate.

I was number 1600 or so in the queue - it counted down until I was around #150 and then said "event full". That was quite a waste of time....

Still not good enough for me anyway. As far as I am concerned, PSA is still closed for business. $100 per card is just not feasible, and having to participate in a lottery for a $50 slot is not ideal for me either.

I agree. Instead of focusing their resources on lotteries I wish their focus was on the back log.

I've submitted a few cards at $100. I like the changes I've seen. The cards I sent in were well worth the fees.

I haven't gotten an Economy sub yet to try it out.

Hey that's better than me, I think I was 3601. I never expected to get in but just thought what the heck. I will be interested to see if they ever clear the backlog and then what? I don't expect the casual collector to have too many cards worth grading at $100 or even $50, I know I sure don't.

I don't see the lower tiers opening up any time soon... MAYBE mid-2023. With the Value tier backlog still taking 12-14 months from earlier, and the $50 lottery filling up in minutes, people are sill chomping at the bit to submit. Imagine how many cards people are sitting on for the lower tiers to open up. I bet if they were to NOT do a lottery system for the $20 tier, they would have an even bigger card backup than at the beginning of 2021. Most of us are sitting on hundreds or thousands of cards just waiting to submit. Grab a book and some snacks, we'll be waiting a while longer.

When it started I was at 4,381 and when it closed I was somewhere around 2,600 so they allotted somewhere in the ballpark of 1,700. Times 5 cards Is 8,500. That shouldn’t have too much affect on the backlog. They are pounding out 40,000 cards per day so 8,500 can be completed in approximately 2 hrs….

It wasn't that many. You have to take into account the people in front of you that dropped out or didn't qualify once they got their. I started at 1773 and it closed at about 375 on my counter. That would only indicate 1400 but I'm guessing it was less than that.

The lottery seems like the fairest way to allocate limited submission slots.

I think it is funny that people think this lottery somehow impedes working on the backlog, these submissions are not even a drop in the bucket. To me, this was a gesture for those that have nice cards but they are not worth $100 a pop to grade. I didn't participate but I have a handful that would make sense submitting at $50 a card.

Eventually, they will scale up to handle the crazy volume out there but feels very boom/bust to me. If they scale way up, I don't think they will have the long term demand for it. I know I wouldn't want to be the one doing the long term planning for card grading.

I agree with the above post. I have hundreds of cards that have been sitting at PSA for around one year. I have come to accept that’s just the way it is. We can’t expect PSA to go out and hire 1000 graders to please the “loyal customers”. First I’m sure it would be a little difficult to find that many graders and secondly even if they could find that many they would just have to lay them off eventually because the demand for grading will not stay at the current level for more than a few years. Sure they want to please their customers but they also have to plan for the future of the business. Some people need to get their heads out of their asses and stop thinking they are so important.

I'm just amused at the people who apparently believe that if the people managing the lottery weren't doing that they would be grading instead.

They are in the Museum of Hobby History. They are extinct and are never coming back.

It's going to be interesting to see how the pricing tiers develop. If sub costs stay near these levels, it's going to be harder to find mid-grade vintage cards (5-7) for set building since it won't be worth the slab fee.

New to this lottery system for 50 dollar subs allocations. Do I have to go buy a $100 CC membership 1st?? You mean to tell me tons of people are paying $100 for the chance at entering a lottery to submit at $50 per card?? I had a membership every year for 10-15 years just not the last 2-3. I'm just a little confused. Can someone clarify. Thanks in advance.

Short answer: it depends on the event.

According to PSA, each submission event has different criteria and there’s plans for several. So for some you will need the membership and for others you will not.

Yesterday’s sent me an email (I didn’t join it) and the first one I got in via clicking a link sent by an friend and didn’t need to be a member.

I would prefer to be able to submit more at the $20-25 range for a 6 month wait than $50 submissions for a three month wait.

I meant, that most of the people in the lottery did NOT just pay $100 for the chance to get an allocation. Most of the people in the lottery have been members when the memberships got frozen in March 2021 and have thus not had to renew yet.

My initial number was around 2,000. Been there before and didn't get an allocation but still decided to hang around. Eventually counted down to under 100 after 30-40 minutes. Then I get "Unfortunately, you are not eligible to participate in this event." Pretty sure I am but it's always possible I missed some fine print.

I feel like I'm being punked. I'm 0 for 4 (I think) with this "lottery" process. I wonder how much collective time has been wasted in these queues? I understand PSA is following the path they believe is best but this experience has certainly not improved this (very long-time) customer's experience.

Edited to add: the message I received [above] was different than the other times I did not receive an allocation. I didn't capture those but they were something along the lines of "better luck next time."

I was wondering if anyone who did win submit yet? I think it said 90 days so it could be too early to see cards sent back.

I can live with $50 for certain cards if the turnaround is less than 90 days. Won't be bulk subbing, but I could see sending in 50 or so over a year.

The market is going to have to relook at values if this continues. I'm working on a few vintage PSA 7 sets and it is becoming very hard to find singles.

I am 0-3. I wish PSA can just tell you that you weren't given a slot early and not wait 40-45 minutes to find out.

  • I happened across the email in my inbox at 11:57 so I clicked it. once the counter started I was 480 and had an allocation around 12:15 I believe. I honestly don't even know if I will use it nor was looking for it but wanted to see how the process worked. I guess my experience was not the same as most :(

Even if I had won a slot, I doubt very seriously I would have subbed anything. $50 per card is simply too steep for me. I'm a lower tier collector. I miss the way things used to be!!! Sham on the Pokemon community for messing this up for us!!! (I kid - I kid!! Don't come at me Pikachu!)

Fifth time's a charm I guess as I got an allocation today. As a test, I entered the waiting room from 3 devices (computer, phone and tablet). I don't know if it was just my browser or what, but the computer timer was a full 30 seconds behind the others. I even refreshed the page and it did not update. That's either a huge glitch or an issue on my end.

I entered the waiting room via my computer first, followed by my phone, and then my iPad. I secured the allocation through my phone (I was just over 1,000). I was over 6,000 on the computer and 2,000 on the iPad. Just some random observations, but I think I tripled my chances of getting an allocation by entering the waiting room through 3 different mediums. Once I received my allocation, I closed out of the other 2.

I have a stack of about 250-300 cards ready to submit to PSA, but only about four of them are in the $50 grading tier. I think I'll wait until the lower tiers open up to submit those. I recently submitted one card in the $300 tier, and three cards in the $100 tier, and have been very happy in the service and turnaround. I hope they open the rest up by the end of 2022.

1st one clicked 1 hour after I got the email so had 0 chance and it was full.
Today I clicked 7 min before the drawing started. Was placed 3864th with a 41 min wait time. So 11:41 I have a 5 min wait time and Im 405 in line. Then it just goes blank and says its closed. Dont think Ill try the next time as I feel I wasted 40 min on my phone. Maybe next year It will be easier

I'm in a similar boat, Jeff. Have hundreds of cards ready to submit, but only a small handful that are worth it to shell out $50 for grading. I'm very curious to see how PSA is going to handle the avalanche of cards they receive when/if they open up the lower price levels again. Realistically, a ton of collectors have just been setting cards aside waiting for those lower price points. When/if they come, how will PSA not be right back where they were when they had to freeze submissions...or worse? This is a big-time concern of mine.

On a side note, are Pokemon and ultra-modern cards allowed in submissions with other cards? If so, they shouldn't be. They're the cards (from what I understand) that created this mess, so they should be handled differently. There should be graders solely for those cards and submissions and graders for the rest. That way, those of us who've been submitting for years and years can go back to the way things were. And the Pokemon and ultra-modern submitters can settle into their own norm. Some of this may be in the works already, but it makes total sense to me.

I am hoping the quarterly specials come back. I hope it will be VERY limited so they won't get swamped. Think 1953 Topps with players whose first name ends in the letter E or 1933 Goudey Indian cards of famous chiefs.

That is an error/message that you get when you already have an allocation that has not been used sitting in the submission center, you aren't allowed to have more than 1 UNSUBMITTED allocation at a time.

Click here and see if you have an allocation like the pic below. Maybe when you thought you didn't get one before, you actually did....

I have taken myself out of the game. It's just not worth it. Maybe if things come back to at least somewhat reasonable but that could be another 3-4 years, maybe more? I'll continue to set aside cards. I'm not in the need for making money from sports cards. I always did it for fun anyway. And now with all of the tax requirements with the 1099's, I will still be waiting until the right people are voted in office to make that nonsense go away. Who knows, I may be 6 feet below the ground by the time that happens LOL
