Does anyone care about this Walking Liberty Half variety?

I am curious if there is any collector / specialist interest in the 1946 Doubled Die Obverse. It is in the CPG but is not nearly as bold or as popular as the Doubled Die reverse for the same date. The DDR is the only variety included in the CU Registry, and the PCGS Pop for the DDR is about ten times greater than the DDO.

I am asking selfishly because I cherrypicked an AU-ish example last week, and I am not sure what to do with it. Is it worth the cost to get it certified with the FS number on the holder, or would the plastic end up worth more than the coin?

Pics of the coin are below, along with a close-up of the doubling on the dress that is the main PUP for the variety.

That's it? No wonder it's not a very popular DDO............is it the 001 or the 002?

I'm sure a few people do. There's always a few. But, minor varieties generally have very thin markets with very few people wanting to pay for the variety. Have you noticed all our CRH friends here posting their "finds" but (almost) never their "purchases"?

i really can't tell the difference between your images and wiles if you have the ddo1 or 2. the ddo2 is listed as having a ddr as well and the first thing i noticed is what appears to be doubling on the rev eagle feather(s) coming off the left back of the leg. BUT when i cross-reference with ddr3, that feature isn't imaged as a diagnostic.

so you'll have to verify pups from your end (i can't with the images provided), or perhaps someone else here can.

let us know what you turn up.

I cant answer your question, but the way you asked it is something quite refreshing.. 🤗
If only the recent wave of dub die posters were the kind of people who asked themselves, "does anybody care about this?"

Thank you for the links. I am fairly certain I have DDO#1 as the doubling on the branches and leaves matches the pics on Wiles' listing, and there are none of the circular die polish lines shown on DDO#2.

After I posted this, I actually spotted two more on eBay in lower grades. I am pretty sure that if I can go out and find them for melt, anyone else who wants one could probably do the same. Thinking I'll just leave this one raw and toss it into my "miscellaneous die varieties" box until I get motivated and/or desperate enough to list them all on eBay.

It is a minor doubled die, but some will want it for a complete set. No doubt, major doubled dies are the glory coins, but a lot of collectors like to do everything in a series. I would put it in an album, but not add the expense of submission. Cheers, RickO

fwiw, i was waiting to do a possible economic valuation until after it was verified as 101 or not. didn't want to spend that time if it was the ddo2. although there are situations where the non-fs version of a variety does beat out its fs counterpart but it is unlikely with this case but i don't know for sure. i think anacs/icg would be a good place to start with pops or even @messydesk. (if he intends to post pop reports one day) obviously WAY after all the recent influx of vam work calms down.

i've found/bought/sold stuff that is WAY off the radar but takes intimate knowledge and connections because that market is pretty thin but still viable.
