No. And if it happened it would probably be known as there would likely be thousands of them.

  • jmlanzafjmlanzaf Posts: 34,553 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have heard of a forum error where "date" was spelled "dare".

  • Thank you for the correction so besides my typo how about the pictures or my question

Dude. I don't work for you. I pop in and out.

Pictures are not terribly good. It might be a die chip. It's not an "8" or the loops would be balanced. It's a "9" with either damage or a die chip making it look like the lower leg of the 9 is a closed loop.

The coin was altered outside of the mint

    Not a mint error

Good assessment, but if you look at my desk you’ll notice my coffee mug is empty…

  • I added in another picture total of four coins please check out the dates close up one there you can tell is a die chip not a due chip (jmlanzaf) on one of them along with the normal dates

  • jmlanzaf you said it yourself, "look like the lower leg of the 9 is a closed loop." Doesn't that mean it's an eight? just saying

  • MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 33,237 ✭✭✭✭✭

The shape is too distorted for a proper 8

A proper 8 would either have both loops equal or the top loop smaller not larger

What looks like, but isn’t, the lower loop is not symmetric

    1. The responses you got didn't seem particularly rude, to my way of thinking.
    2. Saying we are not grown ups, and calling our remarks "stupid ass" is not going to get you very far.
    3. This forum can be welcoming, great place to learn and interact... but don't come in with a (die) chip on your shoulder.

  • That's what I thought it'd be a great place to go to interact and to learn but no instead of having these stupid conversations with you because of your rudeness and not making it about coins making it about your immaturity

    Pardon my typo.

I'm not sure why you're mad. They are messing with me, not you. I answered your question, accurately and honestly without judgment or criticism.

What I said is that the damage or die chip make the 9 LOOK LIKE the loop is closed instead of open. As I also said, the shape is wrong to be an actual 8.

I would just point out that the OP probably would have got a lot more relevant information if they'd posted in the World and Ancients subforum, rather than the US Coin subforum, as this is a British coin.

Not really. It's clear what's going on with the 9 in the date. There is no known 1871 "error". There are a fair number of world collectors and UK specific collectors that frequent this forum as well.

It may be the shape of an 8, but it isn’t an engraved or otherwise erroneously struck 8.

This says it all. There apparently is a pattern in this person's life. Maybe they need to reasses their approach and reaction to things.

Well... that was interesting.... As far as the coin, it is not a mint error, either tooled or die chip. Enlarging the picture shows it is an altered state. Cheers, RickO

hmm.... certainly not unprovoked, as I reacted to the wccoins nastiness. But in the spirit of keeping it classy, I apologize for allowing myself to be so irritated.
