1888-s Morgan Dollar

It seems like on the reverse there are letters from the obverse side. Has anybody seen this before? I’m new at this so I wasn’t sure who else to ask. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the forum!
What you are seeing appears to be die clash marks.
They do not appear to match how Morgan dollars typically clash and may indicate you have a counterfeit.
Full coin photos of both sides of the coin are needed.
@Ashdelp0013 .... Welcome aboard.... Looks like a die clash, but, as stated above, we will need full obverse and reverse pictures to properly assess condition and authenticity. Cheers, RickO

a very nice and respectful post. i'll take the other approach.
your coin is counterfeit and of the 6,000+ known vams, not ONE has a clash mark even remotely similar to that clashed O, especially for an 88-s, especially in that area. someone may argue, ya well, first time for firsts and i don't disagree but i can tell just from that small area on the microscope? that the coin is not authentic.
you're on the right path numsmatically (i hope) but learning authentic vs counterfeit should be at the top of your list, otherwise you are training your mind and eye into a virtually wasteful space, studying counterfeits for varieties/errors etc.
your first lesson here, hard but necessary, useful and hopefully encouraging.
@LanceNewmanOCC "a very nice and respectful post."
I'm in a good mood once or twice a month.

Yes, it's a counterfeit but I kinda wanted to see the full coin just for fun.
i wondered.
you can see half a blurry coin in at least one of the images. fwiw
@LanceNewmanOCC "you can see half a blurry coin"
Because the OP is a new member I wanted them to get a fast response.... I didn't want it to be half fast.

numismatists can be surprisingly outspoken and onery, so w/o a parent (not me) this place would be chaotic at best (like an open forum)!
The room looks plenty clean to me - guess I'm not seeing the right pickup points.
Here's an overlay - see if you can spot the clashing...............if your coin is counterfeit as mentioned above, nothing may line up.

@Steven59 "if your coin is counterfeit as mentioned above, nothing may line up."
There are some pretty cool clashes on some of the counterfeits and many of them don't line up.
i did see an INSANE 81-s B "E" R clash years ago. i think someone on vamworld ended up posting that image if i didn't.
Btw, die clash on a coin occurs as a result of the obverse and reverse die coming together with no planchet (blank round piece of metal on which the impressions are stamped) in place. When that happens some of the details of the obverse and reverse design get stamped on the opposing die. Coins struck after the die clash has occurred will have features of the obverse on the reverse of the coin and features of the reverse on the obverse of the coin.
Maybe a new VAM? I couldn't find a documented 1888-S Morgan with clashed Reverse side: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1888-S_VAMs
That said, I'm guessing a counterfeit is more likely.

It's nice to dream but is a counterfeit, look at the grainy/cast looking surface on the mint mark.
A clash like that would have been found and listed before now and is the same type of clash found on overseas counterfeits.

Wasn't there someone on VW that was trying to collect all the different clashes on the counterfeits?
.
idk, but that is a goal that extends FAR beyond collecting the number of authentic ones, at least from the quantity of counterfeits (morgans/peace) that i've seen with clashes.
IIRC there were 4 or 5 different common ones that were popping up one ebay, it wasn't a real hard set to fill.
Yes, it's counterfeit. I do want to mention that there is one known authentic VAM with peripheral lettering clashed on both sides and misaligned, although very lightly. 1884-O VAM 56A

*moursund it’s not a room it’s a camper and I’ve been stuck in there with four children for 11 months because my builder was terrible, you’re more than welcome to come clean it! 😉
i was the one to initially make the comment and i was just kiddin and trying to get a rise out of ya.
hope it goes well for you but whatever you're doing with coins that leads to you have the one in the original post, be careful out there. immense amount of counterfeit coins raw AND in holders.
.
a simply AMAZING discovery (i recall the vamworld activity for it). makes me wonder how many weaker ones are out there we've missed. i could presume not many considering how close vammers look at silver dollars but then again, seeing how long it takes for some of these discoveries to come to light...
