I taught myself something new about Liberty Seated coinage tonight, now I have a question...

I'm a Type Collector, with the exception of Walkers. I was looking at my 1875-S Twenty Cent piece today and realized that "LIBERTY" on the shield is Raised. On the Seated Liberty half-dime, dime, quarter, Half Dollar and Dollar, "LIBERTY" on the shield is Incuse. I've been collecting coins on and off since 1986 and never noticed this. How many of you all are in the same camp? Or not? Do I not look at my coins closely enough? I think I do, just think I missed this detail. Comments?

That was a big issue with the quick wear on LIBERTY the coin suffered. I bought my first one for a 7070 in 1999 and that is when I discovered the difference.

Some of the best discoveries are from looking at coins you already own!

The raised LIBERTY wears off quickly in circulation, so it's only visible on higher grade coins.
This is something I've known for awhile.

    Possible next discovery:
Compare the edges of your 20c and 25c coins.
    What do you see?

Allegedly, this was done so that people could tell tell a Double Dime from a Quarter. Yeah, right!

An interesting aspect of coin collecting - You can have a coin for a long time, think you know it well, then, one day, you look at it, and notice something you had not observed before... could be a design feature, luster, a die crack, a ding... Just some little detail that suddenly becomes obvious. I have had this experience a few times over the years. Cheers, RickO
