Raw Morgan dollar - your thoughts?

Che_GrapesChe_Grapes Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭✭✭

I rarely buy raw coins anymore because I think most of them are full of hairlines and / or been cleaned and i always said “if they were that good they would have been graded already”!! So most raw coins are just bad coins continually being bought and sold. However this time I found one and I think it is not too bad! Despite a common date I got a good price at auction of ~200 and change so I thought I did well! I looked close and can’t find any hairlines but there is a die crack around the circumference between the stars ...

What do you think? Is she a keeper??

The reverse didn’t come out well but it does have luster and I believe is uncirculated and not cleaned ... I’ll try to get a better one

Hard to say much as the white balance is off for the photos. There are great raw coins out there which are not cleaned or messed with, that is especially true of common date Morgan dollars. But you do have to do some searching to find them.

Yeah I’m not as good taking coin photos as the guys as southern coins - it would look like a MS68+ DMPL if I could do that...

    64-ish. Looks nice to me.
There are lots of nice raw coins out there still.

I would say 1 out of 10 raw coins listed as uncirculated on the market today would actually grade MS 60 or higher...

I agree in that there are LOTS of raw Morgan dollars out there that are problem free.
This coin, from these photos looks to very likely be one of them.
I might even venture to guess it could go better than a 64 and up to a 65.
Looks like a sweet coin to me.

The images aren’t very good. But - and this is a big “if” - if they aren’t hiding anything beyond very minor flaws, the coin looks to have a good shot at 65.

Very clean from hits standpoint, but a little concerned the spots on both obv and reverse would knock it down a point or two. Might be from an old dipping to remove all tarnish that left some staining. Still believe from photos it is MA and probably grade MS64.

I like it. I believe it would grade well, perhaps 64-65. Like the cheek.
