1939 Jefferson nickle

I get brushed off by the only 2 coin dealers in my area.... bc they seem to believe if t's not documented in "the Red Book" then the coin does not exist, and if it does exist, its only bc of damages that occurred after leaving the mint and are man made errors.... now I feel really confident in saying these are errors that happened at the mint and is no way man made.... I would maybe lean more toward man made damage if the just the reverse had those bigger 3 holes and the obverse was normal, but with seeing Jefferson look like moon crater holes through his face and body but no warping of the nickle in any way shape or form makes me feel pretty fang confident man didn't damage this coin and its prob pretty valuable and unknown and undiscovered.... what is anyone's opinion..?? Need any advise I can get... thanks and blessings....

Sorry, but looks like a damaged circulated nickel to me.

    Damaged nickEL.

If you study the minting process, there is no way for that to happen at the Mint.

  • So there is no way no coin ever has had air pockets that popped...?? That's what had to cause those kind of markings? Uve seen coins look like blisters.... if that blister popped?? Cause no man drilled or shot this coin w birds hot, or stabbed it over and over...... certainly not??

  • And I do need to learn more about the minting process.... I am Novice and green as a pea ..... I thank all for everyone's opinion

Quit wasting your time on stuff like this. There is no money to be made in pocket change finds in spite of what the online videos say. The market for minor "errors" and "varieties" is a cherrypickers market and cherrypickers don't pay premiums, they cherrypick. Dealers don't care about minor "errors" and "varieties" unless they are something they can sell at a profit.

the nickel copper mix for nickels at that time was made into bars, the bars were rolled making them thinner and thinner until the desired thickness. If there were bubbles to be popped, it would have been in the nickel blank making process.

    Obvious PMD. (Post Mint Damage).

If you do not know that as a new collector there is no shame in that. But refusing to listen to more experienced people, well....

It is clearly post mint damage. ;)
You are correct it was not done with a drill or bird shot it appears to have been done with a punch & hammer.

Maybe the coin shops in your area are brushing you off and telling you it has to be in the Red Book because you haven't listened to their help and advise. I'm sure they have better things to do and may just want you out of their shop.

It is alright to disagree with someone's opinion, but when you ask it and they all tell you the same thing, might be the smart thing to listen and move on to the next coin. Do you notice the raised areas around the edges of the holes? That is most likely from a punch. Welcome to the forum and good luck coin hunting.

Yes. the raised metal is displaced from the sharp object that struck the coin.

When I was a kid I did all sorts of things to coins. It was a real learning experience.
