I was mindlessly wondering the back hallways of eBay...

And I came upon this. To relax in downtime, I like to casually check auctions by dealers who generally will list hundreds of items, if not thousands. Every once in a while, an oddball item will come up.
I am curious enough to purchase this one as I'd like to see what it looks like in hand!

Ugh... No offense, but I want to say "why"? Typically those coins were polished and then they tone due to the cheap (high sulfur) cardboard holder.

Ugh...No offense, but I don’t know what he paid for the group, and the reverse of the coin on the left is beautiful.

I'm pretty sure it was inexpensive. I get similar sets all the time, often with rainbow (AT) toning like that. I dump them into my cull nickel bucket. As I said, they are usually polished and of "questionable color".

If those coins aren't polished, I suppose it could be a winner. But it looks all too familiar to me.

I have no idea whether the coins are polished, but the one I referenced doesn’t look AT to me.

Depends on your definition - if you want to start that argument. LOL. The toning comes from the high sulfur cardboard. In that sense, the cardboard may be worth more than the coins: you can use it to make many more toners.

    Interesting discussion.
I am aware many of these- especially those 20th Century Type Sets mounted in cardboard holders offer problematic coins, for sure. I've seen and handled those too. It isn't easy to judge based on the seller's photos, yet if I did make a guess, it would be these nickels have not been polished. I think- for the date- it has a possibility of being an attractive coin.

I paid $15. for the lot.

Worth that just for the fun of it! :)
    Look forward to photos.

A lot of years ago, I bought a set like that.... One of the Buffs looked in really good condition.... I have no idea what happened to that set... might be in a box I have not opened since I moved in 2008... If so, it likely is in some terminal state of tarnish by now. I intended to crack them out... mainly for that one nickel. Cheers, RickO
