Toning - Interesting & Unusual

I was just looking at the awesome toned dimes in the
"Toned Dimes through the Years/Picture Thread"

A couple of days ago I looked at some "modern" coins which
were mint boxed and unopened. To my surprise the coins
were toned, as in the case of the ASE, beyond recognition.
Just wondering if you'll have seen anything like this before ???

This is what I found

That gold Buffalo looks bogus. Sorry, but it looks gold plated to me, doesn't look real...screams counterfeit.

I've seen that kind of brown toning on other 999.9 gold Buffalo eagles. It may be a result of poor rinsing of the planchet or perhaps oil from the coining machinery. Any other theories?

I would say that spot on the gold Buffalo coin is contamination, post strike... Would likely come off with an acetone soak/rinse.... Uniquely placed though... Cheers, RickO

Thanks ALL for your comments. The Buffalo is a 2013 reverse proof - genuyne (Onastone). A nice coin with no blemishes except the wind. Will have to look into sending it in for grading at some point. ;) Thanks Again !
