1822 B-1 Bust Quarter G-T-G : 200 Year Anniversary

1TwoBits1TwoBits Posts: 460 ✭✭✭✭

Excluding 1827, 1822 has the second lowest mintage (64,080) in the large diameter capped bust quarter series...right behind 1823. Along with the small mintage, there have only been two known 1822 die marriages up until a recently discovered third marriage was found.

The 1822 Browning-1 variety is called an R-2 in both the Rea/Peterson/Karoleff/Kovach book on bust quarters, and the Tompkins book. The Tompkins book notes the obverse has a dentil count of 124 and the reverse has a dentil count of 123, with an edge reed count of 108. Several proofs were also struck from this die pairing.

The obverse is used for all 1822 die marriages, but the reverse die is used only for the Browning-1 marriage. There are no die states, with the only die state being Prime - dies perfect. The variety is available in all grades.

The example below was crossed to PCGS from NGC a number of years ago. Feel free to try and guess the NGC and PCGS grades if you'd like, and any comments are always welcome. If you have an 1822 B-1, please post a picture of it.

Happy New Year - 1TwoBits

Wonderful example! Looks like a 55 all day.

As far as the cross attempt, I'll say it was the 55 to 55 cross you hoped for as you wanted it in PCGS

That could be strike weakness we are seeing on the OP's coin, if so it might be a 58, but I am sticking with 55, a 'tweener grade. CBQ's are always tricky bc of strike weakness and to see the luster you have to have it in hand, and those 2 things can dictate the AU grade given.

I'm liking the guesses, and will put up these pictures in the NGC holder if it helps give another look.

Lovely coin! 58 ngc, 55 pcgs?

  • 1TwoBits1TwoBits Posts: 460 ✭✭✭✭

The coin was NGC AU50 CAC before being crossed. I would have thought maybe a 53/55 like some of you, but it crossed at PCGS AU50. Thank you for your guesses and comments, and also for posting your examples.

    That’s a really strong AU50. Would’ve thought higher too.
