When I was a kid boxing was far bigger than it is today. Everyone could at least name the heavyweight champion. Now I couldn't tell you. Back then in the 70's the championship fights were all pay per view and very expensive. My neighbor would buy them, and we would order pizzas and have a grand ole time.
I think DD should write a book about the history of boxing. He has all the photos to include.
Around 1979 or so Our baseball team was in Syracuse playing LeMoyne College. Our coach was from Ithaca and knew everyone. As we were going into the locker rooms my coach said, "come with me there is someone I want you to meet."
Just me for some reason. It was Carmen Basilio. What a treat. He is one of the main reason the boxing HOF is located in Canastota NY being born there.

Oh wow, you got to meet the legendary Carmen Basilio, I'm jealous! He's one of my all-time favorites, he was an absolute monster. My buddy was asking me the other day, how do I think boxers from back then would fair today, and the first boxer I brought up was Carmen Basilio, he would be a champion in any era, the guy was hard as nails. Like you said, a lot of people don't follow boxing anymore, most couldn't tell you who the current champions are, the sport has really faded over time as the familiar legends are gone. I do watch boxing today if there is a big fight, but I'm more interested in the boxers from the past because they really made the sport more exciting. Thanks for sharing your story!
It's funny, my buddy asked me the other day, "what got you interested in boxing?" I told him, the Rocky movies. The Rocky movies really portrayed very well what it takes, the heart, the toughness, digging down deep inside to see what you're really made of, overcoming your fear, and I say overcoming your fear because certain guys strike fear into you, because they can turn your lights out with one swing. This man didn't always win, but if I were a boxer in the welterweight division in the 80s, fear is what I would have felt when I stepped into the ring with him. They called him "The Hitman" for a reason, he was tall and lanky, which gave him more leverage for his power shots, and he swung those long arms with tremendous speed and bad intentions. I'll never forget him making tough as nails Marvin Hagler bleed, and the doomsday asteroid he hit granite chinned Roberto Duran with. This is my holy grail card for him, the 2011 Ringside Boxing Cut Signature 1/1 Thomas Hearns.
Look at this, I love this, Zhilei Zhang fought Joe Joyce the other night, and was able to upset Joyce. I love Zhang, on the surface there's nothing fancy about his punches, but they pack a lot of sneaky power and they slowly closed Joe Joyce's face up and it had to be stopped in six. I love this stuff, eat it for breakfast!
Thanks for the clip. I've never watched these guys fight.
From that clip alone, I can say that there are some things relatively unique about how Zhang fights.
Obviously he is southpaw, which is always an advantage to the right fighter. But also his footwork, and punching style... You described it well above, DD. One of the announcers mentions that he doesn't really load up, and he doesn't. Interesting boxer who I am curious to know more about.

I just recently learned about Zhang myself, I believe he's 38 years old which is old in boxing years, he has a record of 28-1 I believe, and he wants to fight Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk next. I don't think he'll beat Fury, too big and tough, but he could give Usyk some trouble if he starts landing those shots consistently.
The Brockton Blockbuster, Rocky Marciano was a savage, you did not want to get down in the trenches with him, you would not make it out. I love this photo of him wearing the mask headgear, it gives him a fearsome look, the masked mauler.

ETA: it was written in the buildup to Larry Holmes ill-fated attempt at overtaking Marciano's record.
Ah yes, the great Larry Holmes was 48-0 when he ran into Michael Spinks, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. A lot of people only remember Spinks for his knockout loss to Tyson, but Michael Spinks is one of the greatest boxers of all-time, the Jinx. Sorry for the late reply, I did something to my lower back last night, hurts like crazy when I try to stand and walk, I'm having to stay in bed right now. I hope it's just a pulled muscle or something like that, it's in the area of my tailbone. I'm going to take it easy for a few days and see if it feels better, if not I'll have to go to the doctor, this sucks.

Yes it is painful, especially when I try to stand and walk. I had a tailbone injury when I played football in my younger days, this feels similar to that. On the bright side, my wife is bringing me food and anything else I need!

The Black printing plate 1/1 is actually the item I purchased, the photo of the card is just a reference to show what card the printing plate was used to make. I typically just collect 1/1 cards and items, I like super rare stuff. I don't really like the card because you can't get a clear view of the bridge and New York City like you can on the printing plate. I've always been fascinated by New York City, never been there but hope to some day!

Two buddies of mine do this, I forget the name of it, but there's an internet food sales company, that has teamed up with many fine restaurants around the country, and they offer home delivery service.
Virtually anything can be ordered, and they package it in a way that keeps it fresh to your door. I checked out their website maybe a year ago, and it's a bit on the expensive side, but of course that's for the added cost of packaging, shipping, etc.
I'd be almost 100% sure that some fine NYC pizza joints would offer their products for home delivery. Just reheat and enjoy. 😊
