UNCIRCULATED 1988 LINCOLN CENT D.D.O./DOUBLE EAR POSSIBLY?

Now I have found many different images of the so-called double ear error, and they range from the smallest of extra lobe to looking as if Lincoln had the first ever gauged earlobes! So after looking on many other sites for answers I figured I’d try to find out if I have an actual UNCIRCULATED 1988 LINCOLN CENT DDO in one of my mint sets?? I will warn you guys the images are not the greatest I took them a couple years back, but if necessary can add more!! Please take a look and and comments are appreciated

Looks like a winner but you can look it up.

    1988P-1DO-010
    | CLASS 4
    CONECA: 3-O-VIII | Crawford: CDDO-008
    Wexler: WDDO-009 | FS-01-101
A strong spread to the north shows as a strongly doubled lower ear. In addition, some minor doubling can also be seen on the hair around the primary doubling. ONLY 3 EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN AS OF March 2020

You can look it up on coppercoin.com

Sure looks like you have one.... There were a couple of members who really focused on these Lincoln cent errors at the time. I am sure we will hear from more of them. Cheers, RickO

  • Any thoughts about this one?

I think it’s a doubled ear, but not this one

  • @MsMorrisine that’s exactly what I seen! And it is in an uncirculated mint set so I can’t really get a real good picture of it so far but I got a better USB microscope So we will see what happens

may as well ask in this thread too

What does one do to verify a new DD discovery?

I owned the 1988 Doubled Ear a few years back when it was considered unique. I sold it to a very advanced variety collector after I had it slabbed PCGS MS63RB, though PCGS didn't yet recognize the variety.

I dont think you have one. The pictures are pretty bad, so I may be wrong, but it looks different and it may just be a trick of the lighting.

The 1988 doubled wasn't found in mint sets, for what that's worth.

My example had a lot of die scratches directly behind Lincoln's head. Check for those.

And take it out of the plastic so we can see what's really going on, please.

You can send it to John Wexler or to CONECA.

My impression is that there is a cut on the bottom of the ear. In other words, I do not see a doubled ear.

Not sure what to look at on those reverse pics

The new pics are too dark. From what I do see they neither add nor takeaway from the situation

On November 23, 2020 my attribution and publishing agreement with CONECA concluded, and CONECA has declined to renew it. Therefore, I have transferred control of the CONECA Master Listing of Die Varieties back to the club. Rest assured that Variety Vista is not going anywhere.

I have SUSPENDED my attribution services for the foreseeable future. You can have your coins examined and attributed by the new CONECA attributers.
Simply post your photos and questions on the CONECA forum at http://board.conecaonline.org/index.php.

    You can post photos there.

Those are the top of the line experts you need

There’s one problem - replies are slower than here.

It’d be nice to have “money is no object” as you could take it to a show where someone can look at this and the quarter in person.

If both are verified positively, I’m not sure of their value.

I really think you need to bust the cent out of the package and take the photos again.
Something is definitely going on with the earlobe, but I can't tell if it is a hit or the reflection or a genuine ddo.
    It is intriguing, though.
The 1988 FS-101 had similar attributes, and the second lobe was not as strong as the primary lobe.

I can only say “unknown” because shipping them to people to verify may cost more than they are worth. Though, you could get an definite answer. Should the quarter be a new discovery a dealer might champion a “discovery coin” label. Sounds good? Sounds expensive and with a possibility of a negative result.

I see the slash but it’s off to one side - left - and there appears to be further doubling on the right.

If you compare it to a regular Lincoln cent of the same vintage, you would note that there is nothing unusual about the shape of the ear.
